Sneijder blames Dutch mole for Euro loss

Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder has come out in defence of Holland manager Bert van Marwijk after a disastrous Euro 2012 campaign.

Labelled as one of the favourites to win the tournament prior to the start of Euro 2012, the Netherlands suffered a humiliating exit from the competition after finishing bottom of Group B with no points to their name. Dutch media questioned van Marwijk's decision-making in the run up to Holland's elimination, but Sneijder told the Guardian that the manager's contributions should not undermined.

"We can't blame the coach for this, he did a great job for us in the last four years," he stated.

The midfielder, who is widely expected to take over the captain's armband from Mark van Bommel in the near future, was one of the few Oranje players to perform up to expectations in Euro 2012. Although van Marwijk believes it was underperformance from the squad's other star players that led to the team crashing out, Sneijder appears certain that a disloyal squad-mate was the main cause of their disappointing showing.

"There are some issues in the squad that have to be solved first, like the player who is leaking to the press about our tactical plans before matches," he said.

Several players and the Dutch FA have come out in support of van Marwijk since the team's exit from Euro 2012. The former Feyenoord manager still has four years left on his contract with the Oranje, but fans and the media believes his conservativeness and inflexibility are a hindrance to the squad's chances of success.
