SINGAPORE - The onset of Singapore's Omicron wave has resulted in an uptick in Covid-19 infections among children.
But why is this happening only now?
One reason is that the Omicron variant is better able to resist children's innate immune response, which protected them during earlier waves, said infectious diseases expert Dale Fisher.
In contrast to the Delta variant - which is more likely to infect the lungs - the Omicron variant tends to affect the upper airways.
"These airways and nasal passages are smaller in children, making the risk of symptoms greater," said Professor Fisher, a senior infectious diseases consultant at the National University Hospital (NUH).
"And this could turn into croup or asthma-type syndromes, due to the inflammation and mucous plugging."
While several countries - including the United States - are seeing more children hospitalised, the general consensus among experts is that infected children do not fall severely ill.
One US study found that children under age five who contracted Omicron tended to fare better than those who had been infected by the Delta variant. Such children had a 67 per cent lower risk of being hospitalised and 68 per cent lower risk of being admitted to intensive care.
The study was posted online ahead of peer review in late January, with its authors suggesting that the greater transmissibility of Omicron may still result in overall higher numbers of children requiring hospital care than they did during the Delta wave.
On Sunday (Feb 13), Singapore reported 9,420 new Covid-19 cases, the bulk of whom were adults aged 20 and older.
But 1,130 were children under 12. A total of 56 children in this age group are currently hospitalised, although none requires intensive care(ICU) or oxygen supplementation.
Last Tuesday, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said children under 12 have the highest infection rate among all age groups here, at about 67 per 100,000 population.
Those aged 12 to 19 came next, with an infection rate of about 55 per 100,000 population.
Fortunately, said Mr Ong, hospitalisation of children due to Covid-19 is often precautionary in nature, with short stays of two to three days.
But it is still important to make sure there are sufficient paediatric beds available, he added. ...

Di Singapura, tak ramai kanak2 masuk ICU Covid di hospital. Kalau ramai kanak2 telah masuk ICU Covid di Hospital Putrajaya, Malaysia, ini mungkin bererti hospital ada buat salah dengan rawatan Covid mereka atau hospital telah beri gambaran palsu yang menakutkan Rakyat supaya mereka hantar anak2 umur 5-12 tahun pergi ambil vaksin Covid.

Update Day 5 PICU)
3 Mac 2022
1. Masih dibantu Ventilator - support oksigen masih lg pada tahap 30% alhamdulillah....spO2 konsisten 100 utk jgkamasa yg pjg.
2. Doc bg susu 180ml ( Full feeding ) tiada tanda2 rejection
3. Masih ditidurkan dan doc dh mula kurangkan dose ubat tidur supaya dia slowly sedar.. bergantung kpd keadaan semasa.
4. Tak demam.. alhamdulillah
5. Keadaan peparu... Better dr result xray yg sebelum ni .. Alhamdulillah.. doc xnak xray byk kali sbab nak elakkan tdedah pd radiasi.
6. Kencing dan urine Alhamdulillah cantik
7. Respons bila nurse uruskan dia..tgn terangkat..airmata mengalir
8. Heart rate 115 ..Alhamdulillah
9. Overall belum stabil lg.. tp byk perkembangan positif dr sebelum2 ni..
10. Body dia respons pd rawatan yg diberikan
11. HB darah dah stabil... alhamdulillah
12. Apa yg pihak PICU target, mostly tercapai... ALHAMDULILLAH
Teruskan berdoa .. inn sha Allah..
Doakan semoga para doktor dan jururawat yg merawat anakku diberikan hidayah/petunjuk/kejayaan dan kesabaran...

Hari ni katanya kematian 100++ banding last week aku rs dlm tahap 50/hari...icu % kurang lgk..but rise in hospitalization..ptt le dgr maeps kembali active..anak iols pun positive ni.i kurung dlm bilik but siang bg ventilation la...Alhamdulillah simptom dia ringan2 je..
Aku pun tak setuju booster as syarat msk mesjid jumaat kt selangor..tp seme dok pakat balun kkm..awat depa tak tanya jabatan agama negeri?negeri lain ok ja...
Well nak booster ke tak booster ke..lantak la..mmg omicron ni pantas je merebak.so nsb2 la kena dpt la immunity lepas baik kan naturally for few months ahead... |

Betul. Sbnrnya bukan kes covid je tgh tinggi utk kanak2. Since semua dh mcm open semula and sekolah mcm biasa, byk kes mcm athma, lung infection, hfmd ada semula. Masa i cek up anak, nurse kata doc sibuk buat round sbb wad paed penuh patients. So logik je kalau kata kes kanak2 naik.
Lately ni pun ramai kawan2 kena, pakej satu rumah terus |
