Benaglio - 6 - Helpless for the goals and untested for the rest of the night.

Schafer - 6 - Failed to clamp down on Park and lapsed when letting Owen in for his first goal. Made up for it with a pin-point cross for Dzeko.

Barzagli - 4 - Guilty of a shocking miss in the first half when he should have nodded home from a corner. He was equally as ineffective when keeping United out at the other end.

Ricardo Costa - 4 - Played his part in the malaise in the home side's defence which let in Owen. Bullied by Welbeck for parts of the game, as the young striker fenced him away to hold up the ball.

Riether - 5 - Let Nani whip in a deep cross to set up Owen and lost on points to the Portuguese in their personal battle on the flank.

Josue - 5 - Tidy and effective when in possession, but did not kick Wolfsburg on to go in search of an advantage. Out-muscled by Anderson throughout the match.

Gentner - 7 - Played with his head up and with strength. Picked out some clever passes to work around the United defence and was aware of the space available out wide.

Hasebe - 7 - Struck a sweet shot in the first half that brought out the best in Kuszczak. Linked up well with Misimovic and Gentner, looked for Ziani as Wolfsburg hunted out a winner.

Misimovic - 5 - Should have buried a header when left unmarked. His night fell apart from this moment. Was anonymous when Wolfsburg needed him to excel.

Dzeko - 8 - Lived up to his pre-match billing with a bullet header to level up the scores. Was a constant threat to the makeshift defence in front of him and proved he has the metal to shine against any opposition.

Grafite - 5 - Struggled to keep up with the Champions League pace after his suspension. Looked rusty and offered little threat. Put out of his misery for Dejagah.

Ziani - 5 - Sunk when Wolfsburg needed him to emerge from the bench.

Dejagah - n/a

MANCHESTER UNITED

Kuszczak - 7 - Ferguson needed another good performance from his goalkeeper and he got it. Mopped up behind the defence and flicked over Hasebe's shot expertly.

Fletcher - 7 - United's Mr Dependable didn't disappoint from centre back. Belied the fact he hadn't played there before with an aggressive performance.

Carrick - 6 - Lost Dzeko for his goal but coped with the demands of playing at the back to good effect, otherwise.

Evra - 8 - Captain's performance from the Frenchman as he held the three man back line together. Belied his lack of height with several important headers.

Park - 5 - Troubled Schafer when he attacked, but will look back with regret at how easily he let the full back in to cross for Dzeko.

Gibson - 6 - Settling in to his partnership with Anderson and Scholes at the base of the United midfield.

Scholes - 7 - Excellent vision to ping the cross field pass for Nani to set up Owen. Drew the sting out of Wolfsburg by craftily moving the ball, and won time when fouled.

Anderson - 7 - Ball of energy in the middle of the park. Bullied Josue and knocked some intelligent passes to the front men.

Nani - 7 - Fantastic cross to pick out Owen was the highlight of a mixed performance. Struggled to make correct decisions consistently, he was substituted for Valencia.

Welbeck - 6 - Gained a great deal of experience from a tough night in Germany. Rose to the challenge of holding up the ball to relieve the pressure on his team mates. Made way for Obertan.

Owen - 9 - Anonymous for the majority of the match, but was on hand as always to apply the finishing touches when played in. Hat trick was crowned with a cheeky chipped finish over Benaglio.

Boss commends trusted troops

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his players after his makeshift line-up won impressively in Wolfsburg.

The United boss opted for a back three of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra, with the latter being the only recognised defender in the starting eleven. Apart from conceding an equaliser to the hosts early in the second half, that trio - and the team at large - held firm to give Michael Owen the platform for a match-winning hat-trick.

The 3-1 win sealed top spot in Champions League Group B for the Reds and vindicated Sir Alex's faith in a new formation.

“It was an experimental system, but the good thing is there was (still) enough quality there," the United manager said.

"You have to trust that the players are good at their job. They are, and they’ve proved it again tonight.

“I thought our control in the first half was very good. It was the same in the second half but our threat towards the end and our speed in the counter attack was very pleasing.”

Sir Alex admitted to having concerns before the match, with so many senior members of his squad - especially defenders - unavailable through injury. The versatility of several players was therefore key to United winning in difficult circumstances.

“The players have applied themselves and that’s important in a game like this," said Sir Alex.


"Darren Fletcher, for example, plays all over the place. If you’ve got players like that who can adapt into a different system then it’s never a big problem.

The United boss also paid tribute to Owen's predatory instincts, following his clinical three goals.

“It was a fantastic hat-trick. You know how good he is in that penalty box. He’s on the shoulder, he makes runs across defenders, and his timing with his runs is fantastic. I’m really pleased for him.”

The Reds can now look forward to the last-16 draw on December 18, knowing that the second leg will be at home - a reward for finishing top of the group.

“It doesn’t matter who we play at Old Trafford, we always feel we have a chance," said Sir Alex. "And our away record over the last three years has been fantastic, so hopefully that helps us too.

“I think we’ll have to face a big team at some point, last year we had Inter Milan in the last 16 when they were top of Serie A. You take who you get and you have to trust the quality of your own players and the experience they’ve gathered over the years. They’re young but they’re a good team."
