[size=+1]Jun Matsumoto, Yuko Takeuchi star in next "Getsu 9" drama
It has been confirmed that Arashi's Jun Matsumoto(26) will star in Fuji TV's Monday night drama series next season. Hewill be the first member of the group to appear in a drama during thattime slot, and this will be his first lead role in a full-length FujiTV series.
The drama, titled "Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro niKagayaku," is an original love story by "Buzzer Beat" screenwriter MikaOmori. The female lead is being played by Yuko Takeuchi (30), who starred in "Lunch Queen" and "Fukigen na Gene," both also written by Omori.
In the show, Matsumoto plays a struggling actor who has developed acomplex due to his father, a famous actor. The character is describedas being "tsundere," a term referring to people who are normally coldin personality but become overly fawning when they are around theirlove interest. In this case, that love interest is an older woman beingplayed by Takeuchi, whose character is said to be spirited, but alsomysterious due to certain circumstances.
"Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku" will air Monday nights at 9:00pm, starting in July.
Fans' concerns regarding MatsuJun's long-awaited Getsu 9 Love Story
Arashi's Matsumoto Jun will play the lead role in Fuji TV's Getsu 9, 'Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku' (Summer's Love Glitters Iridescent) this July. It has already attracted the attention of fans, as it's the first time an Arashi member will lead a Getsu 9 drama and it's a love story that many have been looking forward to.
Takeuchi Yuko is the drama's heroine. Matsumoto plays a second-generation actor who is riding on the coattails of his illustrious actor father. As an actor himself though, he fails miserably and appears more often in variety shows than scoring acting roles. He also has an argumentative nature and even nitpicks on the way girls he dates hold their chopsticks. Skydiving with a friend one day as a distraction to his problems, he loses control of his parachute and lands on a large tree near the beach. As he is stuck hanging, a beautiful older lady with a cheerful disposition played by Takeuchi happens to pass by and their love story begins.
According to the producer, the highlight of the series will be confrontations of "tsundere young man vs. genki lady", appropriate for a Getsu 9 romance time-slot. Matsumoto's last appearance in a romantic role was in 2007's Hana Yori Dango 2 (TBS).
MatsuJun won over many female fans through his character in Hana Yori Dango. However they were not drawn to his more recent dramas 'Smile' (TBS) and 'Bambino!' (NTV). This time too, his character is not the regular cool guy, but for now it's a warm welcome as it's a love story. Ever since 'Kimi wa Petto' (TBS), fans have been anticipating another drama where he falls in love with an older woman. A fan commented, "I'm really looking forward to it." A more ardent one said, "Right now it's already making me go dokidoki, next it'll be a nosebleed."
There are worries though, as even KimuTaku is having a hard time with current viewership ratings. While the first episode of 'Tsuki no Koibito' was an impressive 22%, it has gradually decreased, 19% for the second episode and 15% for the third. The storyline isn't fresh, and the appeal of the characters are diminishing - these are a few opinions that have arisen regarding the drama. Now it's not just about the cast anymore.
The general TV audience has become more selective about what they watch. No matter how popular the leading actor or actress is, if the story and premise aren't appealing, the series will not be successful. Based on this are reactions to MatsuJun's upcoming drama:
"He falls from a parachute and a beautiful lady happens to pass by??"
"It's a ridiculous title. Isn't it too long?"
It's this early and there are already voices of concern. The screenwriter is Omori Mika, who has worked with Fuji TV before (Fukigen na Jiin, Buzzer Beat). Even before its first broadcast, there are already obstacles she must overcome. Will Matsumoto be able to carry this drama through? It seems quite certain that much attention will be devoted to this series in July.
