Darron Gibson Hails Manchester United 'Defender' Michael Carrick
Midfielder praises United squad's versatility...
Dec 7, 2009 5:11:12 AM
Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has praised Michael Carrick after the England international stood in as a makeshift centre-back at West Ham United on Saturday.
The Red Devils won the game 4-0 and Gibson, who scored with another superb strike, was pleased to have secured such an impressive away win in difficult circumstances.
He also felt that Carrick's willingness to swap positions showed how strong Sir Alex Ferguson's squad really is.
"Not only did we win, but to come away with such a convincing performance is a great show from all the lads," the Irishman said, according to Sporting Life.
"Michael did ever so well, but I don't think Rio's got anything to worry about. The manager told Michael he might have to play centre-half if anything happened.
"It's unusual for us to be missing so many defenders, but we've got so many players who can come and step in and give a performance and fill the gaps."

Good to go
Patrice Evra - The 'shortest centre back ever' according to Fergie - he may get a few more games at that position, yet.
Ritchie De Laet - Not eligible for the European match but looks set to make more than the odd appearance in the coming weeks.
Craig Cathcart - At Watford until 4 January but could, potentially, be recalled.
David Gray - A regular for the reserves, Gray has primarily been used as a full-back, he spent time at Crewe in 2007 and is currently at Plymouth.

Injury list increases for Ferguson
Manchester United defenders John O'Shea and Jonny Evans have both been ruled out of action until January.
Evans has been struggling with a calf injury while O'Shea's problem was not specified by the club on Monday.
It is more bad news on the defensive front for manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who ended Saturday's 4-0 win at West Ham with Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra in the centre of defence, Ryan Giggs at left-back and Darren Fletcher at right-back.
The double blow is part of an atrocious injury situation which leaves Ferguson without 12 players for Tuesday night's game against Wolfsburg, plus the rested Giggs and Owen Hargreaves, who is still troubled by a knee complaint which has kept him out all season.
Ferguson confirmed Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov took minor knocks at West Ham.
Rooney has hamstring injury while Berbatov has a knee problem, with both rated doubtful for Saturday's home game with Aston Villa.![](static/image/smiley/default/cry.gif)
But it is in central defence where Ferguson has the biggest headache.
It appears he is trying to persuade Evra to face Wolfsburg's impressive forward duo Edin Dzeko and Grafite alongside Carrick, who has already been confirmed as a centre-half.
Another option would be Darren Fletcher, with Park-Ji Sung occupying a full-back berth.
Ferguson had hoped there would be an improvement in the situation by the weekend but while Nemanja Vidic should have recovered from flu, the outlook for Wes Brown, who limped off at Upton Park with a hamstring injury, is not as positive.
"We are hoping to have to Wes fit but hamstring injuries are difficult. It is not an easy one," said Ferguson.
