Arsenal 1-2 Wigan

Wigan pulled off a shock win at Arsenal to boost their Barclays Premier League survival hopes.

Franco Di Santo fired the Latics - who last week beat leaders Manchester United - ahead on the break after seven minutes, before Jordi Gomez doubled their lead inside 90 seconds.
Thomas Vermaelen reduced the deficit with a bullet header on 21 minutes, but the second-half onslaught from the shellshocked Gunners never came as the Latics moved five points clear of the relegation zone.

Arsenal vs Wigan Player Ratings
Arsenal's top-three aspirations were dealt a blow on Monday as Wigan recorded a shock 2-1 win over them at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger's charges were given a rude shock just seven minutes in when Franco Di Santo lifted the ball over Wojciech Szczesny and tapped into an empty net after being played through by Jordi Gomez.

And just a minute later, the Latics doubled their lead when Gomez fired home from close range after Szczesny had saved his initial effort.

However, Thomas Vermaelen pulled one back for the Gunners in the 21st minute when he found the bottom corner with a header after a sublime cross from Tomas Rosicky.

Nonetheless, Roberto Martinez's defence held firm for the rest of the game and picked up three valuable points in their bid to stave off relegation.

Here, ESPNSTAR.com runs the rule on the players who took to the field on Monday evening.

Arsenal
Wojciech Szczesny - 7

A solid display from Szczesny, who couldn't really do much to keep out both of Wigan's goals. The visitors did try to test the Pole from distance but he showed safe hands on every occasion.

Bacary Sagna - 5
The French international has been one of Arsenal's stars this season, especially since returning from injury.
However, he had a real nightmare against Victor Moses, and will be happy to see the back of the Nigeria international.

Johan Djourou (off 74') - 5
Arsenal showed how badly they missed Laurent Koscielny on Monday, with Djourou providing absolutely no resistance to the few attacks Wigan threw at him.
He let his direct opponent run in behind him on a number of occasions, and has now proven he is useful neither at right-back nor centre-back. Maybe Wenger should try him on the left?

Thomas Vermaelen - 7.5
The Belgian centre-back looked to have sparked an Arsenal comeback when he found the back of the net with a perfectly-placed header in the 21st minute.
Apart from that, Vermaelen was troubled by Di Santo on a number of occasions but acquitted himself well.

Andre Santos - 6.5
Santos put in a relatively good shift on Monday, and always looked eager to get forward.
His touch let him down a couple of times, but he was always ready to provide the Gunners with a spare option on the left.

Alex Song - 7
Song was one of Arsenal's better players against Wigan and never stopped trying to find gaps in the opposition defence with his ever-improving distribution.
The Cameroonian also won possession well in midfield, and is fast establishing himself as one of the league's best midfielders.

Mikel Arteta (off 9') - N.A
The Spaniard was unfortunate to pick up an injury early on and had to be replaced in the 9th minute.

Tomas Rosicky - 8
Rosicky was at his creative best again on Monday but unfortunately, his team-mates failed to convert the chances he created.
Whipped in an excellent cross for Vermaelen to nod home in the 21st minute.

Theo Walcott - 6
Another disappointing night for Walcott, who has to find some consistency if he is to truly fulfil his potential.
The England international lost control of the ball far too easily and was kept very quiet by Jean Beausejour.

Yossi Benayoun (off 61') - 7
A fairly lively display from the on-loan winger, who had two excellent chances to score for the Gunners early on. On both occasions, he did well to get his header on target, but Ali Al Habsi was equal to the task on both occasions.

Robin van Persie - 6.5
Not one of Van Persie's best performances in recent times. Failed to get himself in many scoring opportunities, although he make a number of nice passes to get his team-mates into advanced positions.
Let his frustration boil over in the end and didn't do himself any favours when he refused to shake Gary Caldwell's hand at the final whistle.

Subs
Aaron Ramsey (on 9') - 6.5

Ramsey was brought on early on and got plenty of the ball in the middle of the park. While it was a fairly error-free display, the Welshman did display a distinct lack of creativity.

Gervinho (on 61') - 6
The Ivorian was brought on with half an hour remaining but struggled to find a way past the Wigan defence.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (on 74') - 7
It was very surprising to see Oxlade-Chamberlain brought on with only 20 minutes to go, especially considering how ineffectual Walcott had been.
When he did eventually come on, the young star provided the Gunners with some much-needed pace, and drilled in a couple of dangerous deliveries from the right.

RVP heads PFA award shorlist

Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie is the favourite to win the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award after being named alongside David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Joe Hart, Scott Parker and Wayne Rooney on the shortlist of nominees.

Arsenal's Robin van Persie and Man City's Joe Hart are both on the PFA award shortlist
Van Persie has enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, plundering 34 goals in all competitions for the Gunners so far, and is heavily tipped to scoop the prize.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor is one of those who feels the Dutchman is a worthy nominee, saying: "He has been amazing. When you think of the players Arsene Wenger has brought to the club - he came from Feyenoord for £2.75 million I think and that is incredible really.

"When you think of Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Marco van Basten - he is in that mould of absolutely top-class strikers that Holland, quite phenomenally, manages to produce.

"You could pick half a dozen of his goals out for goal of the season. Arsenal were struggling for some time but he was a real talisman for them. He seems to have lifted the team and got them back believing in themselves again and looking to qualify for the Champions League, giving all the Arsenal fans some hope.''

Manchester City can boast three players among the nominees, with Argentina striker Aguero also nominated for the Young Player of the Year award after an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League following his £38 million move from Atletico Madrid.

Aguero faces competition for the young player award from five British players: Gareth Bale, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Daniel Sturridge, Kyle Walker and Danny Welbeck.

The winners will be announced at the PFA's prestigious annual awards night on Sunday.

PFA Player of the Year nominees: Sergio Aguero (Man City), Joe Hart (Man City), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), David Silva (Man City).

PFA Young Player of the Year nominees: Sergio Aguero (Man City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd).
