ni aku quote kn posting menarik dr the gooners ::
Central Defense. Personnel-wise, the problem is the partnership: two smaller, pacy cbs who are two easy to beat in the air. In addition, Toure is an undisciplined player, not good at organizing the back 4.
The solution is to bench Toure. Gallas has been fantastic since losing the captainship; he's an excellent defender with a Terry-like partner.
So the problem now is to find a partner for Gallas, and that problem centers around a contradiction. On the one hand, we need a 'big-man' cb like Terry or Vidic -- an experienced, no-nonsense man-marker who's good in the air. On the other hand, the high back line, which Wenger likes to play, means that both our cbs must have good pace. How easy is it to find an experienced quality player who is both a beast and pacy?
The pace issue is the problem, imo, with Hangeland, who is otherwise a great candidate, and maybe also the problem with Jagielka. Is Gary Cahill pacy? There's a rumor with him in it making the rounds. I don't believe Lescott is an improvement. From what I hear more than what I've seen, either Bruno Alves or Zapata would check both boxes.
The best solution is probably not to insist on playing such a high back line, then Hangeland would be great, but will AW change that?
All of the above is actually irrelevant, since it's an article of faith for me that there are 101 mean-ass, excellent cbs behind the old iron curtain whom we could get for £4-8m. |

ni aku tepek lg..
Center midfield. We don't just need a dm, we need a specific type of midfielder -- an energetic, ground-covering ball harrier (cf. Flamini, Fletcher, Mascherano; I would LOVE Fletcher btw). Therefore, Alonso or Barry wouldn't do, despite the fact that (imo) they're both quality.
Tymoshuk -- would be good, but is going to Bayern.
Veloso -- rarely seen him but I wonder whether he's just another one of those FM legends. Certainly, young as he is, he's hardly a guaranteed answer for the problem.
Would love De Rossi or Yaya Toure but they don't seem realistic. Don't know anything about the 101 Ligue 1 midfielders we are continually linked with. We've not been linked with Toulalan, but I do like him. I wonder whether he would be exposed in the prem as not quite so good as he seems now.
On this on, honestly, I'm not too far off thinking that we can't realistically do better than Song/Denilson, both of whom are already good and hopefully will continue to get better.
There's a big tactical question that's inextricable from transfer question. Do we play Cesc in a two-man cm or not?
* Chelsea play a three-man cm (with two defensive-type players in Ballack and Essien)
* Liverpool play two dms in cm, and
* y'all tend to move between those options.
We need to do the same, probably. Which means that the question is not, say, Is Denilson good enough? It's, Is the pair of Denilson and Song good enough. I think it's easier to answer yes to the second question.
I think we should get in a top-quality dcm, just to give us options and depth, but since you seem to need two dms these days, it's far from the solution that a lot of folks think.
The real problem. The biggest problem really isn't lack of players -- it's lack of experience, poor defensive training, and insufficient effort in things like pressing the ball. Rumour has it that Steve Bould is joining the 1st team set-up, hopefully as a defensive coach. That could be a beginning. |
