Melo began his career in Flamengo, Cruzeiro and Grêmio in his native Brazil. In 2004, he joined Malaysia Premier League side Sabah on loan. His performance was disappointing, and due to the intense competition among the Sabah squad and laborious attribute, he only made 5 appearances. That same year, Melo moved to Spain, joining Real Mallorca at the end of the 2004–05 season. After, he joined Racing Santander, where he spent two seasons, before moving on to Almería.
After a successful first season at Almería, Melo agreed to transfer to Italian side Fiorentina in an ?13 million transfer for the 2008-09 season.[1] This was confirmed after Almeria's match against Recreativo de Huelva in La Liga.[2] He made his debut in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Slavia Prague, and scored his first goal in a viola shirt against Atalanta in the Serie A. On June 21, The Brazil international said:
It's clear that interest from big clubs makes me happy because it shows I have worked well, but I would like to once again confirm that I am very well in Florence and have a great relationship with my teammates, the club and the fans.[3] |
