MH370: ‘Under siege’ Malaysians hit back at China
March 28, 2014

Malaysians hit back at Chinese nationals for blaming them over the MH370 tragedy, saying that China itself is unable to detect the plane's debris despite having superior technology.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians are chafing at scathing Chinese criticism over the lost MH370 passenger jet, with fed-up officials, media and citizens now hitting back after being assailed as incompetent liars and murderers.
Authorities in Kuala Lumpur have been on the defensive since the Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines flight went missing on March 8 with 239 people aboard, most of them Chinese citizens.
In addition to near-daily displays of fury from Chinese relatives, China’s tightly controlled state media have heaped opprobrium on the Malaysian government and airline, while its secretive Communist government has urged more transparency in the investigation.
A letter from the relatives, blasting Malaysia’s behaviour as “irresponsible” and “inhumane”, demanded China now mount its own investigation. And a US law firm says it is consulting with Chinese families on possible legal action against Malaysia Airlines and aircraft maker Boeing.
Malaysia has largely held fire — China, the world’s second-largest economy, is its primary trading partner. But the strain is starting to show.
Defence and Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who had trodden lightly on China in often-testy press briefings on the crisis, was asked by a Chinese reporter Tuesday about delays and misdirections in Malaysia’s initial response.
Hishammuddin shot back that time was wasted early in the search by Chinese satellite images showing purported plane debris in the South China Sea. Beijing later acknowledged the images were false, and the search for wreckage is now focused far away in the Indian Ocean.
We also lost loved ones
A day later, the minister insisted that “history will judge us well”.
“Anybody who has gone through this, what we have gone through… has indicated to me that we have done quite an admirable job,” he said, adding that no country has a monopoly on grief — the plane carried 50 Malaysian citizens.
“For the Chinese families there, they must also understand that we in Malaysia have also lost loved ones.”
State-controlled press have joined in, with the Malay Mail newspaper running a front-page editorial Friday headlined “MH370 — Malaysia under siege”.
“Countries whom we call friends must now do more to prove their friendship,” it said.
“These governments seem happy to allow their citizens to complain and even accuse us of withholding information.”
The editorial urged Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to rally Malaysians to defend the country’s “reputation and honour”.
The plane inexplicably diverted from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing flight path. Malaysia now believes it plunged into the Indian Ocean far to the south, and that all aboard were lost.
In their daily press briefings, Malaysian officials have made a series of contradictory statements that added to the confusion, including conflicting information on the number and ethnicities of passengers who boarded the flight with stolen passports.
There have also been about-turns regarding the crucial sequence of events in the plane’s cockpit before it veered off course, and Malaysia’s armed forces have been criticised for failing to intercept the diverted plane when it appeared on military radar.
Come clean about Tiananmen Square
Such mis-steps have fuelled families’ anger. Scores of Chinese relatives were allowed by authorities in Beijing — who normally keep a tight lid on public dissent — to protest at Malaysia’s embassy on Tuesday, shouting that Kuala Lumpur authorities were “murderers”.
A day later, relatives called the ambassador a “liar” and a “rogue” during a meeting in Beijing.
But the New Straits Times, a Malaysian government mouthpiece, said in a Thursday editorial that “even abject misery cannot excuse the accusation of murder”, echoing similar commentaries in other Malaysian media.
Criticism from China is particularly rankling for the ruling United Malays National Organisation (Umno), which champions the interests of multi-cultural Malaysia’s majority group, Muslim ethnic Malays.
Umno regularly stokes Malay resentment against the country’s sizable ethnic Chinese community, including reviving memories of an ethnic-Chinese communist insurgency in the 1950s.
Jahabar Sadiq, editor of the independent web portal Malaysian Insider, called the Chinese criticism unfair, noting that Beijing, with its far greater air and sea capability, also has been unable to find the plane.
“The search for this missing plane has shown them the limits of their technology, their muscle. It puts China in its place,” he said.
“It will take them some time before they get the same kind of respect as America, England or Australia would get.”
Malaysian social media sites have bristled with anger over the Chinese calls for more information-sharing.
“China demanding the full truth and complete transparency about the plane crash? How about they come clean about Tiananmen Square first?” read one representative posting, referring to China’s violent suppression of pro-democracy protests in 1989.

- BERNAMA

Report: Pilot did it, investigator says

KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 — Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the experienced Malaysia Airlines (MAS) pilot who flew the missing jetliner MH370, is believed to be solely responsible for diverting the Boeing 777 hundreds of miles off-course, an investigator said.

No one on board had aviation experience like the 53-year-old, the unnamed official claimed in the USA Today report this evening, not even his co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, a 27-year-old who was relatively new to handling the wide-body jet.

But Zaharie’s intentions are still yet unknown, as the police have not found any links between the 53-year-old to any terror group or any possible personal financial problem that he may have had to have forcefully plunged the plane, and the rest of its 238 people, to their deaths.

The USA Today story, which was also picked up by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald, did not name the official interviewed, but said that he or she is a “high-ranking officer attached to a special investigative branch of the Malaysia police force”.

The article noted that investigators are now pressing for information from Zaharie’s relatives, hoping to find information that may shed light on the mystery of MH370’s disappearance.

The unnamed official also reportedly refuted reports that Zaharie had received a phone call moments before the flight departed.

According to media reports, the phone call had come from a woman who used a false name to obtain the SIM card to make the call.

“He said as far as investigators knew, he did not receive a phone call to his cellphone at that time,” USA Today’s report said, citing the official.

Earlier today, several media organisations quoted Zaharie’s youngest son Ahmad Seth as breaking his silence after several reports appeared to suggest some fault on his father’s part in how MH370 went down.

The youth discounted the possibility that his father had deliberately downed the plan, saying: “I’ve read everything online. But I’ve ignored all the speculation. I know my father better”.

“We may not be close as he travels so much. But I understand him.”

The 26-year-old’s words were published in local English daily The New Straits Times.

In a Reuters report earlier today, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey reportedly said that he expects his agency to wrap up its probe of Zaharie’s home-built flight simulator within the next one or two days.

“I have teams working really around the clock to exploit that. I don’t want to say more about that in an open setting, but I expect it to be done fairly shortly. Within a day or two we will finish that work,” he was quoted saying.

The police have been ordered to dig deeper into the backgrounds of the 12 crew and 227 passengers after Malaysian authorities confirmed that the doomed MH370’s communications had been deliberately disabled before the Boeing 777-200ER swerved left from its eastward route to Beijing.

On March 15, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak confirmed that authorities believe the jetliner’s movements had been “deliberate” and handled by someone on board.

The same day, the police searched Zaharie’s and co-pilot Fariq’s houses, where they had recovered a self-built flight simulator, among other items, from the former’s home.

Malaysia then sent the home-made flight simulator to the FBI in the US to retrieve and analyse the deleted data.

Last Wednesday, acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein reminded the public that all 239 people on board MH370 remain innocent until proven guilty.

Malaysian law enforcement officials previously informed the US counterparts that nothing suspicious was found on the personal computers of Zaharie and Fariq.
