Blackpool game off

Following ongoing discussions between the Premier League, Match Officials and Manchester United it was agreed match referee Peter Walton would inspect the Bloomfield Road playing surface on Friday afternoon.

After consulting with the groundsman and club officials the Northants based official travelled to the Fylde Coast and inspected the playing area at the stadium.

Mr Walton expressed concern that the severely affected areas of the playing surface would not thaw sufficiently for the game to be completed.

The Premier League and officials at Manchester United were kept fully updated with the ongoing situation at Bloomfield Road.

United supporters who purchased a ticket for the Blackpool match are advised that their ticket will be valid for the rearranged date.

United to cull crock Hargreaves

Manchester United are poised to suffer an astounding £34.5million loss by letting Owen Hargreaves leave the club for free.

According to English paper the Sunday Mirror, injury-prone Hargreaves, who has just six months left on his contract, will be allowed to depart the Theatre of Dreams at the end of the current campaign after the club accepted that he will not be able to shake off his longstanding knee injury.

The England anchorman, who has made just 39 appearances for the Red Devils since his move from Bayern Munich in 2007, has been laid low by painful tendonitis in both knees which subsequently required surgery.

After more than a year and a half of being sidelined, Hargreaves finally made his comeback against West Bromwich in October only for him to last just five minutes after tearing his hamstring

In fact, United were ready to hand the midfielder, who turns 30 next month, a play-as-you-play deal should the player prove his fitness but even that option has now been discounted.

Clubs in England and around Europe have already been informed that Hargreaves will be made available come the end of the season.

However, it is the financial implications of his injury plagued United career that has staggered the Old Trafford outfit.

Having cost the club £18million from Bayern in 2007 after long drawn negotiations, Hargreaves' £80,000-a-week wages means United will have added more than £16.5million to the cost by the end of the season.

The player, who has only made 26 starts for United since his move, is worth an incredible £1.33million per match when combined with his transfer fee and salary.

Even though Hargreaves was suffering from knee injury niggles prior to his Old Trafford move, it was mooted that rest rather than surgery would help alleviate the problem and he even capped his first season with by winning Premier League and Champions League.

However, surgery could not be avoided and United sent him to world-famous knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman to end his injury jinx on his right knee in November 2008 and he had another operation on his other knee two months later.
