'Dua tahun lagi buat Giggs'

“Selamat Hari Jadi Ryan,” kata Ferguson.

– AFP

Fergie: Giggs an "exceptional player"

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Ryan Giggs after the veteran midfielder netted to inflict defeat on Avram Grant's Portsmouth.

Giggs scored his 100th Premier League goal during the 4-1 win at Fratton Park, with Wayne Rooney grabbing a hat-trick including two penalties.

With Giggs turning 36 on Sunday, Ferguson said: "He's an exceptional player. A rarity. He will play for two years yet.

"Happy Birthday. He's had it 36 times in his life, wait until he gets to 67. I think he'll be retired by then."

Pompey's goal came from the penalty spot, with Kevin-Prince Boateng scoring, although an offence did not seem apparent when Mike Dean pointed to the spot. Replays suggested Nemanja Vidic tugged Frederic Piquionne's shirt.

"The linesman has put the referee under terrible pressure and he has to listen to the linesman who is 50 yards away," Ferguson said.

"You see these things every weekend in the penalty box. If you are saying everyone who wrestles at a corner or tugs at a jersey concedes a penalty kick then that that's fine. But it doesn't happen that way and this linesman has changed the whole course of normal decision making.

"So it was a very disappointing result for us to get a penalty against us in that situation. Half-time came at a good time for us and the important thing was to keep our discipline and composure and play our football."

Rooney earned the first penalty, then Giggs set up his second and earned the penalty for the England striker's hat-trick.

"With strikers you always want them to score, he's got the matchball which is nice," Ferguson said.

Grant lost his final game as Chelsea manager to United and suffered defeat again - although he took heart from the performance and feels his side have the ability to climb from their place at the bottom of the league.

"It was a strange game," he said.

"If I came from the moon and heard the result I would have thought Man Utd played great and Portsmouth was not so good but we played very well. I thought we played better. We created a lot of chances and conceded soft goals.

"Our goalkeeper almost didn't touch the ball and Tomasz Kuszczak made three great saves.

"Now our target is staying in the league, it won't be easy but it will be possible. The football was good and the spirit but there are things we have to do better - first to take points. When we play against teams close to us we need to win them."

Grant expects to make signings when the transfer window opens, adding: "In January of course we want to make the squad stronger and we will do."

Cardiff deny United deal for Matthews

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has denied that Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Adam Matthews.

A host of Premier League clubs are said to be showing an interest in the exciting full-back, who has burst onto the first-team scene this term.

Reports had speculated this week that United had fended off rival interest and struck a deal for the 17-year-old.

"It is pure speculation," Jones told Sky Sports News.

"Nothing has happened, nothing has been said and at this point in time we are trying to build and if we can keep hold of all our best young players, that is the best way to do it."

Jones did admit that if United were to come in for Matthews, they would find it very hard to stand in his way.

"We have always maintained that if the right offer comes in for one of our players, and it is the right offer for this club we would listen," he continued.

"It is very difficult if Manchester United are interested, for us to say stay here and see out your contract with Cardiff and forget about going into the Premier League with one of the best clubs in Europe, we had that problem with Aaron Ramsey when Arsenal came in, if there is an offer made, then that will be done and we will look at it if it comes in writing."

The Cardiff boss admits that Premier League interest in his players is flattering.

"Every week we seem to be getting links with Premier League clubs wanting our players, last week we had Peter Whittingham linked with Sunderland, week before that Jay Bothroyd with Aston Villa, it just means we must be doing something right," he stated.

Lure of United offers Leeds added incentive for FA Cup replay

LEEDS UNITED manager Simon Grayson admitted his players had been given a massive incentive to win their FA Cup second round replay against Kettering with Premier League champions Manchester United waiting in the next round.
The League One leaders were held to a 1-1 draw at Rockingham Road on Sunday and had to be thankful to Jermaine Beckford's 78th-minute equaliser which cancelled out Ian Roper's 63rd-minute headed opener.

The winner of the replay - to be played at Elland Road - will then face a trip to Old Trafford on the weekend of January 2-3.

"It's a fantastic draw," said Grayso.

"For either us or Kettering to get through. Obviously, we'll be there for Manchester United, but we've got to get through Kettering first. It's a big incen tive for both teams.

"Before the replay we've got a couple of games, a league game on Tuesday and then Saturday, so we've got to concentrate on them first and keep in the professional manner that we did today.

"Then we can hopefully look forward to playing Manchester United."
