There will be no one else like me...

ALEX FERGUSON opened up yesterday about his amazing career in football management.
The Manchester United boss, 68, revealed the secrets behind his success at a sports conference in Qatar...
Fergie on... starting out in management in 1974
There were two clubs interested in taking me as a manager. I spoke to Ally McLeod, who was Scotland manager in 1978, and he told me never to wait until tomorrow and always to go for today.
He said if you were out of the game for two minutes, people forget you.
I went for the interview at East Stirling and got offered the job.
In those days you went through the list of free players and those out of contract and do what you could do.
It was a challenge. It taught me the other end of the scale. I had to depend on my own ability to galvanise and energise the players I had.
We did very well and, after a few months, St Mirren came in for me. I was between a rock and hard place - disloyalty to the club who gave me my chance and my own ambition to do better.
I called Jock Stein for advice. He told me to sit in the stands at both clubs and I would have my answer.
Fergie on... success at Aberdeen
I didn't regard it as a great feat at the time because I was so focused and determined since I had been part-time at St Mirren and East Stirling.
But I had been a player at Rangers so I was used to a big-club mentality.
Every manager has to try and get their personality into the team and that's what I tried.
I told the players the only thing that mattered in Scotland was beating Celtic and Rangers and we got better and better before winning the league in 1980. It would have happened at some point.
Fergie on... throwing teacups
There is nothing wrong with losing your temper if it's for the right reasons.
My reasons were always about not reaching a certain standard. Then I would let them know.
I never leave it until the next day. I don't believe in that. Some managers wait until Monday when things are calmer but I want to let it go after the game because I am already planning for the next game.
Once I let it go, it's finished and I don't bring it up again.
It still applies. I don't wait until tomorrow. But I've mellowed a great deal. Some of the staff say to players now, 'You're lucky compared with 20 years ago'.
But I'm dealing with more fragile human beings than I used to be.
They are cocooned by modern parents, agents, even their own image at times. They need to be seen with their tattoos and earrings.
It's a different world for me so I have had to adapt.
Fergie on... arriving at Manchester United
I was always aware of the history. Matt Busby had a vision of taking United into Europe and producing young players in a conveyor-belt system.
They won something like five FA Youth Cups in a row with players who all became famous.
There's no doubt that, if it hadn't been for the Munich air disaster, the success would have been phenomenal.
I don't believe in building a team, I believe in building a club - and that comes from youth.
People talk about me being one game from the sack but in my first year we were a distant second to Liverpool and I knew I couldn't win the league with that team.
I was faced with a team who could not accept another challenge.
I decided enough was enough and got rid of nine or 10 players and brought in five or six who could be the nucleus of a new team.
Fergie on... the FA centre at Burton
It's probably the biggest step England has taken in the last 30 years.
We don't get the kind of player through that we used to because we don't have the platform to do so.
Things like computers are taking people's lives away so to have a centre for concentrating on producing young players will be a major step forward. It has to happen.
Fergie on... managers getting the sack
We are in a very competitive world because of the media and supporters. Very often you get kneejerk reactions.
Brian Clough and Arsene Wenger are great examples of what can happen if you don't change a manager. Changing doesn't guarantee success.
Longevity has proved in my case, in Brian Clough's and Arsene Wenger's, that it can bring success.
You wonder when directors are sitting round the table in the boardroom with their cheese and all that whether they actually consider Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough or Arsene Wenger.
I don't think anyone else will manage for 24 years. I'm a phenomenon.
Fergie on... no longer doing it all
I strongly believe in delegation. Twenty-odd years ago I was doing everything at United. I was involved in scouting, youth, coaching. You can't do that for long periods these days.
There had to come a point where delegation was important to me and I trusted the people I was delegating to.
Fergie on... managing difficult players
I told the directors more than 15 years ago that the most important person at Manchester United was the manager. No one is more important.
The minute a footballer becomes more important than the manager, your club is dead. The history goes right down the drain.
It has to be that way. My concern will always be control.
The minute a footballer threatens that control, I have to take it seriously and consider if it's affecting team morale and results and the atmosphere in the dressing room. If that's the case, the player has to go. There is no question about that.
You can't compromise yourself in that situation. We've had such decisions over the years and I've always thought I've been right.
But there's nothing wrong with egos. Look at Eric Cantona, he has to be the catalyst of the 1999 team.
What he did was bring a confidence to the squad when he put that collar up and strutted his stuff.
He brought something different to the young players - and they all followed the Pied Piper.
Fergie on... the Wayne Rooney saga
You don't necessarily have to heed advice after listening to it. Some young people take bad advice.
He has an agent who is not the most popular man in the world and he obviously sold it to Wayne to ask away. The boy rushed in.
But the minute he heard the response of the public and our supporters, he changed his mind, he knew he'd made a mistake.
There's nothing wrong with that as long as you recognise it.
He immediately apologised and agreed a new contract within a couple of hours.
It wasn't done to get the contract, I don't think that for a minute. But maybe he should have listened to better advice.
We want to get Wayne back to his best and when that happens I think it'll be OK. His recuperation has gone well in the States but I'll have to see him in training before I can decide whether to bring him back.
He's had a good week in the States and we've got him to the point where we want him to be in terms of accelerating his fitness.
Is he ready to get into the first team? We'll have to assess that when I get back.
Fergie on... England at World Cup
The expectations were too big. The league is unremitting and unforgiving. It takes a lot of energy out of you.
Sometimes a pearl of wisdom comes out of the window - a winter break. I've been saying it for 35 years but no one listens. It's an important issue.
Fergie on... his favourite match
The Champions League final in Barcelona will always be the one.
People say we were lucky with two goals in injury-time but it epitomised the character of the team - no surrender, perseverance, and that's how we won it.
Fergie on... his favourite manager
Jose Mourinho has been phenomenal, a meteoric rise. He can make a joke about himself.
Arsene's work at Arsenal has been fantastic, doing it his way. Some people may question why they haven't always bought senior players but he believes in young people and there's nothing wrong with that.
Bobby Robson was a perfect example for anyone who wants to go into management and doesn't understand the energy needed for the job.
It's hard to be enthusiastic all your life but that was Bobby.
A lot of young managers' ambition gets drained and they start on a sort of chain of going to different clubs.

Lindegaard in talks with United
Manchester United appear to have opened talks with Aalesund over Denmark goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.
Aalesund chairman Bjarne Haagensen has revealed he is currently in England with Lindegaard's agent, Henrik Hoff, to talk with United.
Haagensen admitted that a deal to take Lindegaard to Old Trafford could be just hours away.
"Henrik and I are in place in Manchester," Haagensen told TV2.
Asked if a deal was close, he responded: "It is. We are in the middle of it. I can't say more right now. We will send a press release in three or four hours."
Lindegaard himself is returning to his club after keeping a clean sheet against Czech Republic - but he would not comment on the rumours of an imminent switch.
"I have only heard the rumours about United, I have absolutely no comment," he told VG. |

Butt to explore South China option
Former Manchester United ace Nicky Butt could come out of retirement after accepting an offer to train with Hong Kong side South China.
Midfielder Butt, who called time on a career that also included stints at Newcastle and Birmingham City in May, will arrive in the territory later this month and will feature in South China's league game against TSW Pegasus before deciding whether to remain with the club until the end of the season.
"I wanted some time out of the game to concentrate on my next step either in or out of football. However I feel fit and when South China FC approached me to join them for a week's training and a game, the prospect excited me," said the 35-year-old former England international.
"I could see from their team and commitment to the game that this was something I wanted to be a part of. I have been to China many times with Manchester United and England and the reception we received was always unbelievable.
"The development and growth of Asian football since 2002 has been phenomenal and can be seen from the influence of Asian players in the Premiership. I am really looking forward to this new experience and the challenges it will bring."
Chairman Steven Lo believes the acquisition of Butt could help South China capture next year's AFC Cup, the Asian version of the Europa League. South China reached the semi-finals in 2009 before losing to eventual winners Kuwait SC.
"Everyone is excited by Nicky's arrival and the knowledge and experience he can bring to the team," he said.
"We are always looking to attract talent to strengthen our squad and this demonstrates our commitment to that. Nicky's records internationally and domestically speak for themselves and I am sure he will receive a fantastic reception when he arrives at Hong Kong Stadium.
"I myself am also excited to meet Nicky and discuss with him the about playing South China for the remainder of the season, including in the AFC Cup, which is always our goal to win." |
