On the 15th anniversary of Karan Johar's blockbuster debut we look at why this film refuses to age and remains one of the best movies of all-time.
5 Music
Bollywood has moved on and so has Karan Johar, but unfortunately composer duo Jatin-Lalit could not progress with the changing times. However their chartbusting soundtrack for KKHH remains one of Hindi cinema’s finest albums ever. And is a 90s classic that continues to resonate in the hearts of every music lover. Be it the title song or Ladki Badi Anjani, or that theme tune that has become part of the Dharma Productions logo AV; romance has seldom sounded so melodious.
4 Salman Khan
Shahrukh Khan as Rahul was the undisputed star and crowd-puller of the movie, but Salman Khan’s cameo took the film to a different level. In a career that does not boast of too many varied performances, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has been that one film, where Sallu displayed his acting chops and gave a showcase of what he truly is capable of.
3 The Look
KKHH made Bollywood cool. The Riverdalesque look, complete with the hip clothes and sets, made even the staunchest of snobs sit up and take notice of the film. After all here was a film where even the extras looked as hot as the heroines.
2 Kajol
In a movie that starred two Khans and the sexy Aati Kya Khandala girl, Kajol overshadowed them all with her career-best act in an author-backed role that did full justice to her range as an actress. As the sporty Anjali who goes from looking like a tomboy, to becoming the perfect dulhania, Kajol scored a three-pointer in every sense of the word.
1 Karan Johar’s Direction
KKHH remains KJo’s most watertight work ever. Opening his film with a death scene, KJo smoothly shifts gears to romance and comedy and ends it all like a perfect family drama. KKHH’s biggest victory was KJo’s ability to make his audience alternate between laughter and tears, serving a paisa-vasool, satisfying, cinematic experience.
