Here it is, not more & not less

Episode 16

Woojin is walking back and forth, putting his thoughts in order. "I'm going to find out a Hospital for you. The best place for you, where there is fresh air. You have to be admitted as soon as possible. You're fortunate that doctor Haewon has been taking care of your case since two years ago. (He sighs) There's too many things to do."

"I'm not going to have a surgery. I decided that since the first time I found out about my condition." Eunha says.

"Change your mind. You've got to have the surgery."

"Even if I do, my chances are slim, right?"

"Don't worry, I'll save you."

"How many months do I have left? If I wait, I may live like 6 more months, don't you think? If I have the surgery, I'll have to do it within this month... or at least within the next 2 to 3 months... before the arteries get completely atrophied... which means I may die one or two months earlier. (Looking up) I've no courage. I want to live at least that much longer, a little more. Every moment seem so precious..."

"lease... please..." Woojin is pleading. "There's no one who loves you as I do. So listen to me."

"Woojin-ah... (She's not looking at him) Never before did I want to live as much as I do right now. I wanna live, I really do. Let me live a little longer. I want to save at least those two months of my life and see Andrea. I want to forget about everything else at least during that time and be happy with him. It won't be for too long, so God would allow me this much... to just look at him."

"... Why are you so stupid? OK, fine! Then, live for Andrea. Try to live because of him! If you die, what's going to happen to him?"

"It'll be fine. Andrea has Someone who could comfort him, so he'll be OK. Yes, I'm being punished right now since I coveted for what wasn't mine. I coveted for what belonged to God, and I lost."

"Don't make me laugh." Woojin stands up, defiantly. "There's no God. And I'm going to save you." He leaves.

"That's all I had to say." Andrea just finished explaining to his elders.

"I think," Ms. Maria interjected, "that you shouldn't take such a decision so much in a rush... What would people say? Not many people would understand your decision to resign the priesthood right now. You will just become the talk of the town... Isn't it so Sister? (Sister Jemma doesn't respond) Besides, you should think of Father Pedro..."

"I'm sorry..."

"Don't think of me, you don't have to. Whatever decision you make, it should be the correct one. But you must know that just as it's wrong to become a priest as an escape, it's also wrong if you give up priesthood without having full assurance from God."
"I'm sure of it," Andrea answers.

"Ok, if you say so... Let me warn you though, things might get tougher from now on. If you're not going to just leave now, you have to be ready to face the consequences of such an action."

Andrea is still dressed in the priest's soutane and he presses the bell of Eunha's apartment. She opens the door: "Andrea..."

He smiles at her. "Give me some breakfast, would you?"

They are sitting around a small table, and Andrea is eating some toasts with orange juice. Eunha is watching him eat. He sits down straight, looking at Eunha with a smile. "Don't look at me like that. I can't eat because you keep on looking."

"Hey, don't make me blush..." Andrea continues eating. "Andrea..."

"Yes?"

"Can I tell you something?"

"You can tell me anything."

"I shouldn't be saying this, but... can we meet like this once in a while? Only for a few months... and after that, I'll forget you and let you go... Could we meet in secret for just a couple of months?"

Andrea holds her hand. "No, we can't. I don't want to meet you in secret. I told you to trust me, but is this how you're trusting me? You're too much. Do you remember asking me to be with you at your wedding, at your child's baptism and at your funeral? You asked me to be there as your priest. When I heard that back then, I was really devastated. I couldn't bear to think that someone else would be standing next to you. I thought then that if only I could be that someone, I would give up everything... for you."

"Thank you... for telling me that now. For corresponding to my love at last... Why didn't you tell me back then? If you had done so... I wouldn't have let you go... Then, I would have spent more time with you..."

"It's not too late even now. Let's spend the rest of our lives together. Let's be together, and hope together."

"... What... are you talking about?"

"I decided... to give up my priesthood. I won't become a priest. From now on, I'll be with you forever. At your wedding, at your child's baptism... and I'll be next to you at your death's bed... as your man."

Jung Woojin is driving, and arranging the paperwork for Eunha's operation. He's planning to meet the prestigious doctor Yoon to talk about it.

He enters Eunha's apartment and finds her sitting numb. He sees the extra plates and orange juice.

"Did you have visitors?"

"Andrea says... that he'll give up... that he'll give up his priesthood. What do I do now? What should I do?"

"eople are already talking about it," says the Bishop to Andrea. "I told you that you wouldn't be able to escape easily. Are you still trying to run away from what's tormenting you?"

"I'm not running away any more. I'm planning to plant roots in there. I've already decided."

"Maybe you thought until now that it was your choice to become a priest and not God's calling... But things will change from now on. And people will throw stones at you and at the woman you love."

"I'll take the stones!"

"Go there and meditate, seeking God's will in your life. Then, you'd know... Let me ask you, what would you do if God's will is different than your decision?"

"If my decision is disobedience to the Lord, I'd be in anguish, even unto death. But there's nothing else I can do. All I can hope for is that the Lord may have mercy on me."

"I'll let you know of our committee's decision." Andrea kneels down before the Bishop. "Go to the monastery for one month to pray... If you haven't changed your mind after that, I'll let you go."

"Thank you..."

Towns people are gathered in front of the Church, talking about Andrea's resignation. "We should have stopped it..." someone said, sighing.

"oor Father Pedro, this ain't his fault." Andrea hears them discussing.

"But this is his nephew, Father should have stopped this."

"I told you, I knew it! It's all because of that woman."

Andrea walks towards them. "Hello..." They all ignore him and leave.

He goes inside the Sanctuary and sees his uncle praying...

The mothers of 2 girls who were staying at the Mission Clinic are dressing their daughters. Sister Estelle tells them Brother Andrea didn't give them leave yet.

"Isn't he resigning the priesthood?"

"And all that because of a woman. How can such a person take care of the children?"

Sister Estelle: "Brother Andrea stood up many nights taking care of them."

"He's not a priest anymore. I already arranged another Hospital, so let's go."

"If I knew this would happen, I would have borrowed money and sent her to a better Hospital."

Woojin and Eunha sees the mothers leave. They bow to Sister Estelle. "I'm sorry to show you this..." says the Nun.

"No, I'm sorry..." answers Eunha. Sister Estelle leaves to prepare some tea.

She meets Andrea outside.

"Sister, I saw the mother's taking the girls... What's going on?"

"Well... you have visitors right now."

========================
Eunha is sitting at a sofa next to Woojin. Andrea is sitting stiff in another sofa.

Woojin speaks up: "I see you've gone pretty far."

"It's nothing that concerns you. But tell me... why are the two of you like that?"

"Why are you doing this? What for?" Eunha says, coldly.

(Softly) "Don't worry. It's only for now. Soon everything will calm down."

"There's no need for you to wait till the storm calms down. I can't give up now, I won't let Eunha go. I came to tell you this. (He holds Eunha's hand.) We decided to keep our relationship and persevere."

Andrea looks at Eunha: "What's he talking about?"

"Eunha said that she can't bear to see you give up your priesthood, that it's too big of a burden for her."

"Is that true? Eunha-ya... I want to hear it from you."

She looks up: "That's right, I've no courage to face the consequences. Besides, I can't betray Woojin. (She's looking away) You said that my feelings towards Woojin was love too, you did. My feelings towards you is something of the past."

"Eunha-ya, look at me and tell me!"

She looks at him straight to his eyes. "I was confused. The man I love right now is Woojin. I'm being honest."

Andrea can't believe it. "Can... you tell me... again?"

"The man I love now is Woojin. Woojin... yes, it's Woojin!"

"Why... are you lying? Why are you lying like this?"

"I'm sorry, but I have nothing else to tell you." She stands up and leaves.

Andrea was going to follow her but Woojin doesn't let him. "Let her go. Don't you know the consequences of your action? Don't make Eunha go through that. You don't have the rights to." Woojin leaves.

Sister Estelle was standing with her tray. "I came in too late... Brother Andrea, Eunha-ssi is leaving!"

the continuation:

Andrea is running after the car. He keeps on running, following the car even in the road. Along the way, Woojin stops the car. He backs off, letting Eunha off and he leaves.

Andrea and Eunha are staring at each other. Andrea walks towards her, panting. "You're tormenting me again... but I won't believe you... I don't believe that you stopped loving me. I'll never believe it... You can't go anywhere."

They went inside a cabin. "Then you'll go to the Monastery for one month?"

"One month is nothing. You'll... wait, right?"

"Can't you... just be a priest?"

"What?"

"I know how much you wanted to be a priest. That's why I had to hide my feelings for this long. I'm upset that I suffered this long in vain... why don't you just be a priest?"

Puzzled: "Why are you saying this?"

"I just feel bad that you're giving up your dreams for me. I feel I don't deserve it."

Andrea grabs Eunha's hands. "Don't feel sorry, don't feel bad. And don't lie to me like that anymore ~ that you don't love me, don't lie like that. I'm ready to give up everything and suffer anything for you."

"What would you do if I run away after you gave up everything for me?"

"You can't run away. I just showed you that you can't escape from me. Don't run away. Even if you want to, don't do it... for my sake. From now on, I can't live without you. I can't breath without you. That's why you shouldn't vanish from my side. One month from now, after I return with the rights to love you as a man... (Looking at her eyes) Would you... marry me? After that, the two of us... let's live happily for a very long, long time."

Eunha smiles a faint smile. "Yes... for a long, long time..."

"Eunha-ya..."

"till death do us part..."

Andrea smiles: "Yes, till death do us part." Andrea keeps caressing Eunha's hands.

Woojin was waiting for Eunha in her apartment. "For a moment, I believed you. When you said that I was the man you loved, I really wanted to believe that. I really wished it was true." He stands up. "I'm selfish. I know all you're going through but I'm saying this..."

"What am I supposed to do with you... with both of you?"

"I'm leaving. But I'll be back tomorrow. I'll come till I convince you that you'd have the surgery. And you must be admitted into a hospital for that..."

"Andrea doesn't know yet. I didn't tell him. I won't tell him, till I die. Promise me that you won't tell him. No matter what happens."

"OK, I promise."

"Thank you. And I have one more request. Can you find me an isolated hospital for me? Once you find me that, I'll leave. I could leave tomorrow if you want. In this kind of situation, it's better to be alone. It's so much easier since one's not leaving anything behind."

"Eunha-ya..."

"I'll have the surgery."

Woojin is busy researching, and arranging for Eunha's surgery, making many phone calls... Looking tired and hopeless... he remembers his father.

Doctor Jung MyungWoo had a nightmare. "JinSoo! JinSoo!" He wakes up, sweating. He is holding the bottle of whisky in one hand and looks at an hypodermic needle... he puts it back inside his desk.

Woojin enters and sees him drinking. He gives the old man a wet towel. "Father, stand up. Stand up and wipe your face with this. There's something you must do."

Yoori signs: "Oppa, don't fight with Dad."

"Yes, I won't. So just leave."

"What's going on?" asks the father.

"Examine this," Woojin says, giving a physical examination's file. "This is my first and last request to you. I've never asked you for a favor before so you have to grant me this. This is your specialty. Perform the surgery. If you can't, at least tell me how to do it. (Woojin looks closely into his father's eyes) Save her, please."

"Who is she?"

"Her life is more precious than mine. (Lady doctor enters the office) Father, she's dying... please save her."

"It's Eunha...?" interrupts the lady, in shock. "Are you telling me Eunha is dying?"

Eunha is on the phone while she packs her luggage. "Yes Sister, I'm eating and exercising plenty. Can I... go?"

Sister Jemma is on the other line: "Of course you can! He'll be gone for one moth so you should come. And tell me what you want to eat. Don't worry about the people, this is your house. Ah... there's a meeting at 7:00 p.m. so if you want, try to avoid that."

Eunha picks up the phone. "Yes, this is Jo Eunha. Yes, I'll be admitted there today. Could you change my name? Someone might look for me, that's why. (Bell rings) I'll call right back. (She hangs up) Who's this?"

Lady doctor enters, looking down. "Doctor..." The lady sees the luggage. "I'm going for a trip. Please sit down, is this your first time here? I'll get you something to drink."

The lady looks up. "Are you trying to run away again?"

"Doctor..." The lady hugs her. "So you knew... I was thinking of telling you... I've a request."

After explaining, the girl continues: "Please help me."

"I can't, I can't help you. Even if this is the best for them, I don't want to. I can't let you leave like that again, all by yourself."

"It's not for them, it's for me. I already arranged a place to stay. After I leave, make them both forget me."

"You're going to take all that burden upon yourself and run away? My goodness... (the lady holds the hands of Eunha and breaks down) What sins have you committed... you already suffered so much! Why is God making you ill like this?"

"Let me go doctor. How could I stay otherwise? Andrea's future is at stake. And Woojin can't do anything right now... I can't keep them beside me as I die, and watch them suffer. That would be a greater torment for me. You know my heart doctor, don't you? If Andrea were to know this, and he stayed with me while I was dying... I'd suffer much more. I don't want to make him go through that. I don't want! Let me just run away... please?"

"It's all my fault. If only I haven't taken you to the orphanage... You wouldn't have to run away like this!"

"No... (Tears are falling but she's smiling) No, doctor. I'm most thankful you did that. You don't know how happy I've been because of that. Thank you."

Everyone's saying grace for the meal. Andrea is praying the longest. Eunha watches him. They both look at each other, with a faint smile.

They are walking outside in the dark. Andrea holds Eunha's hands into his pocket but she tries to take it away.

"Don't move, not today," he says. "Let's promise. I want to try doing what you like doing so much."

"Do you think just anyone can do it?"

"Let's promise. That you won't run away. Aren't you promising?"

"Yes, I'll promise," Eunha answers.

"And that you'll come to see me looking exactly like this a month from now."

"OK."

"And when we meet again, let's be happy. Let's smile all the time."

"OK. If we meet again... And you too, promise me."

"Again?"

"Yes, again. Andrea... we shared more happy memories together than sad and difficult times, right?"

"Yes."

"And if you remember times that I made you suffer... forget them all."

"Let me think... (Smiling) I can't remember any..."

"OK, thanks. You have to promise me this also: that you're going to forget every words you spoke to me. That you disliked me, that you were disappointed and that you were getting tired of me... all those harsh words."

"I'm really sorry..."

"I forgot them all... and I know that you said it because you loved me and because you were hurting... I knew it from the beginning. (She looks at him) Whatever happens, don't ever forget that I knew your heart all along..."

"OK."

"Great. Then now... Can you hug me?" He hugs her as a gentleman would... to his lady. Eunha is saying good-bye in her heart.

The next day, she's watching Andrea walk away. He waves at her with a happy smile.

Andrea's Voice: <<<One month from now, after I return with the rights to love you as a man... Would you... marry me? After that, the two of us... let's live happily for a very long, long time.">>>

Woojin is talking over the phone while driving. "I'm going there right now Eunha-ya, to make the arrangements. I'll tell you the details when I come back in 2 days. See you then."

Eunha was listening through the answering machine. She leaves, carrying her luggage, and dropping 2 letters in the mail box.

Andrea is dressed as a monk, meditating, and looking at the beautiful nature.

Eunha's Voice: <<<Andrea, were you alarmed?

You must be really upset that I broke my promise and ran away like this. I decided to go to South America as a missionary doctor. It wasn't an easy decision. But I felt that you were destined to be a priest and I was called to live as a free being. You may be angry at me and even hate me for this. If that's so, forget me, erasing from your mind this run-away and gutless coward.

But after a long, long time has passed... do think of me sometimes, a little once in a while? (Andrea's trimming the trees. Another monk gives him a letter) Imagine me being somewhere around the world, living a life that's worth living... (Andrea opens the letter) Is this too much to ask? May the Lord grant me this...

Good-bye... my one and only Woojin...>>>

Andrea starts running.

Woojin enters his home and he finds a letter on top of his desk. He opens it and he starts running.

He enters Eunha's apartment in a hurry. "Mother... What are you doing in here?"

"I was waiting for you and for Andrea."

"Why...? Where's Eunha?"

"Eunha left. She's gone."

"Did you know about this? (He gets no answer) So you knew... You knew Eunha was planning to leave."

"Yes, I knew. In fact, I arranged everything for her."

Shaking his head: "I can't believe it. You know in what kind of a condition she's in. And you sent her away like that? Mother! (His eyes become smaller) Are you serious when you say that Eunha went to do mission works to South America?"

"Yes."

"Mother."

Noise of doors and footsteps. Andrea enters, like in a trance.

"Andrea," calls the lady doctor.

"Where is Eunha?" he asks. "I received a letter... saying that she's going to South America... Is this true?"

"Yes. She left this morning."

Andrea walks closer. "That can't be true. She promised me, that she'd wait for me. No, that can't be true..."

Woojin grabs Andrea, shaking his neck. "It's all your fault. All your fault!!! She sacrificed herself in order to send you back. In order that you can be a priest!!! ~to keep the truth from you. So that you could live comfortably! She sacrificed for you! (Andrea is stunned) Eunha... she's..."

"Stop it! Stop it Woojin-ah..." says the lady doctor. "Please stop both of you..."

"She sacrificed... for me?" Andrea is trying to understand.

"No, it's because of me, I did it. I couldn't stand seeing both of you getting hurt so I sent her away. Because she was being tormented standing in between the two of you."
"What does it mean... that she did it for me? (Lady doctor looks away.) Did anything happen to Eunha that I'm not aware of?"

"Eunha said she didn't want to be responsible for you giving up your dreams. That it was too heavy of a burden and scary. That's why she asked you to forget her. That you may hate her and erase her from your memory."

"You've gone too far, mother," complains Woojin. "Is Andrea the only one for Eunha?"

"Yes, I'm selfish. Your mom... I can't think of anyone besides the two of you. Thus, hate your mother... and forget Eunha, both of you. That's what she wants, that you'd forget her." She walks out.

Andrea is still in shock. Woojin looks at him with hate and leaves.

Woojin is inside his car, hitting the handle in madness.

Andrea is walking as a zombie. It starts raining hard. He just stands there under the heavy rain.

Doctor Jung MyungWoo is drawing diagrams of hearts and arteries. He hears the noise of doors. He goes to see his wife. She has been silently crying.

The old man tells Yoori to leave them alone, that he has something to tell his wife.

When Woojin enters the house, cast down, Yoori tells him that mother looks strange today. "Where is she?" he asks.

"She's talking with father."

"OK. Don't worry and go to your room."

========================
"I'm a very selfish woman. I sent away on her own someone who's dying so that my children would suffer less ~ to die by herself, all alone. I couldn't forget JinSoo, and I abandoned my son in order to forget him..."

"It's not your fault, no. It's my sin, I'm the sinner." He kneels down before her. "Please, forgive me." The lady doesn't understand. "I was the one who denounced JinSoo's hiding place. You were not the only one who knew where he was hiding at, I too knew where he was, because he trusted me that much. I hated him because he had everything I wanted, and he had you. That's why I denounced him, that's why... I didn't know he'd die like that. He was closer to me than a brother, he was that good to me. All my life, I lived with his shadows..." Lady doctor doesn't respond.

Woojin is outside the room, listening.

He is NOT PERFECT and obviously LOST in his quest.

Andrea akhirnya seperti terjatuh dari tempat yang tinggi, bila dia tak dapat mengawal perasaannya langsung. Dia keliru, sedih & marah serta benci dengan apa yang berlaku di sekelilingnya. Tambahan pula dengan pengakuan Prof. Jung pasal kematian ayah kandungnya tu. Andrea langsung tak dapat mengawal perasaannya. He's definitely not made to be a priest. He thought by being a priest, dia boleh elakkan diri daripada penderitaan & rasa terseksa. He thought by being a priest, he would forget the sadness of being left by his mother. He thought by being a priest, he could save himself from the torture of love. He thought by being a priest, he could forget the past and be happy.

Tapi Andrea, like the rest of us cuma manusia biasa, dengan perasaan & keinginan semulajadi. Pengalamannya masa kecil yang membuatkan dirinya mahu menjadi paderi, the only way he thought to redeem himself. By being a priest, he thought he could regain his confidence. Andrea yang menyangkakan dirinya tak cukup sempurna sehingga dia ditinggalkan ibu semasa kecil.

But at the same time, amidst all the confusion, dia masih tak mahu melepaskan keinginannya menjadi paderi. And he is still blaming others for everything that ever happened, totally lost this young man.....

1. dia susah-hati sebab Eun-ha tiba2 menghilangkan diri tanpa pesan & tiada siapa nak beritahu dia mengapa

2. Prof. Jung mengaku dia yang menyebabkan kematian ayah kandungnya

3. Woo-jin menuduh Andrea yang menyebabkan kematian Prof. Jung (yang bunuh diri) akibat tindakan Andrea enggan memaafkannya

Because of that dia nak melupakan kedukaan hati dan cuba menyeksa diri akibat rasa bersalah kerana dia tak dapat mengawal perasaan marahnya. IMO, Andrea kecewa sebab dia merasai kesemua perasaan yang tak sepatut dirasainya sebagai seorang paderi.

Saya tak tahu apa endingnya, walaupun ada banyak threads pasal Love Letter ni tapi sengaja elakkan supaya tak tahu spoiler ending but what I've heard, it's not a sad ending. Quite a reasonable ending, too....

Poor, poor Andrea...what he said to Father Pedro is what really bothering him all along...memang dah lama dia pendamkan semua tu sebab tak nak sakitkan hati orang2 di sekeliling dia...tapi akhirnya, semua yg terbuku di hati diluahkan jugak gara2 arak...and Jo Hyun Jae was really good in these scenes as he conveyed the whirlwind emotions of Andrea convincingly...he's truly the star of the show, besides Soo Ae...

an interesting observation: Jung Woo Jin vs Min-chul (BD)...
