Best known as: American Idol finalist, Effie in Dreamgirls (2006)
How much she lost: Dropped from size 16 to size 6, though she hasn't discussed actual pounds lost
How she did it: Weight Watchers -- she's a spokesperson. She started tracking her points with an iPhone app, and says the program has taught her portion control and how to choose foods that keep her satisfied.
Expert's take: "The beauty of Weight Watchers is that it empowers you to make your own healthy choices with real food," says Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, spokesperson for the ADA and associate professor of nutrition at Boston University. "Nothing is off-limits as long as it fits in your points budget, and you learn to control your portions and change your habits. The online tools and group support are great, too. Plus, it's affordable." |

Best known as: Rebecca Howe on Cheers, star of Kirstie Alley's Big Life
How much she lost: 75 pounds
How she did it: Jenny Craig, though she gained a lot back after her endorsement of the diet plan ended. Now she understands the importance of a "chubby buddy" to work out with and keep her diet on track. In March 2010 she launched her own weight loss program, Organic Liaison.
Expert's take: "Yo-yo dieting can wreak emotional havoc," says Blake. "It takes years of effort to lose weight; why keep going through that work? Having a friend to cajole you to get to the gym is a great idea. You don't want to blow them off, and you always feel better afterward. As for organic foods, there's nothing magic about them. They can be expensive, and they won't make or break your weight loss efforts. The real magic foods are fruits and veggies, organic or not -- they outsmart your stomach by filling you up on fewer calories." |

Best known as: Director of The Lord of the Rings movies, The Lovely Bones (2009)
How much he lost: 70 pounds in 2004/2005 – and he continues to keep it off
How he did it: By following a strict diet of yogurt, muesli (like an uncooked oatmeal) and soup, plus exercise at a home gym.
Expert's take: "With any severely restricted diet, you run the risk of cutting out important vitamins, minerals and fiber," says Blake. "Without variety, it's almost impossible to meet your nutritional needs, and the monotony will make it hard to sustain. A medley of lean meats, dairy, whole grains, fruits and veggies will help keep the weight off without deprivation." |

Best known as: George Costanza from Seinfeld.
How much he lost: 30 pounds in 18 weeks
How he did it: Jenny Craig -- he's a spokesman
Expert's take: Blake sees many pluses to Jenny Craig, but says it's important to think about what happens once you're off the diet. "Unless you can mimic the portion sizes and variety [of Jenny Craig foods]--or someone else prepares your food for the rest of your life--you (may struggle) to keep the weight off." As for his rapid weight loss, she stresses that not everyone can pull it off. "Be careful of setting up a goal you can't achieve, or you'll end up throwing in the towel. A good aim is to lose 10 percent of body weight over six months." |

Best known as: Barbara Cooper Royer on One Day at a Time
How much she lost: Almost 50 pounds
How she did it: Jenny Craig -- she's a spokesperson. She reports maintaining her weight loss by staying active (she ran the Boston Marathon in April 2010) and concentrating on portion control ("You can have anything you want if you don't have the whole thing"). She also never skips meals, knowing she'd just binge later in the day
Expert's take: "Val's got it just right: She changed her habits when it comes to both eating and exercise," says Blake, of Bertinelli's emphasis on portion control and regular exercise. "She knows that a serving of cookies doesn't mean devouring the whole box. |

Best known as: Host of The Drew Carey Show and The Price is Right
How much he lost: 80 pounds
How he did it: Watching what he ate (he claims to follow a zero-carb diet) and regular gym workouts with a focus on cardio.
Expert's take: Cardio is great in theory, but cutting out carbs will zap your energy to do it. "Zero-carb diets are unhealthy and dangerous," says Blake. "You need carbs to give your brain the glucose to function properly. We should all get about half our calories from carbs like whole grains." |

Best known as: Dan Conner on Roseanne
How much he lost: Over 100 pounds
How he did it: A no-sugar diet and exercising six days a week with a fitness coach
Expert's take: "Eating literally no sugar means giving up fruits, which are the ticket to weight loss," says Blake. "But cutting out added sugars makes sense if they're a big part of your diet. Replacing soda with water, for example, is a good idea. Candy and soda are easy to overgulp. Bottom line: It's calories, not sugar, that cause excess weight." A sliced naval orange has 60 calories; six pieces of orange-slice candy, 300! |

[img]Best known as: Marcia Brady on The Brady Bunch
How much she lost: 50 pounds over 10 months. She originally lost 30 pounds in 2007 on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club, but put that weight back on.
How she did it: She re-dedicated herself to a healthy eating plan and exercise (to overcome a food addiction).
Expert's take: "Regaining weight in the public eye isn't a good feeling," says Blake. "But if she's changed her habits--choosing sensible foods, not eating when she's bored, fitting exercise into her day--she's got a better chance of keeping weight off for good." |
