Synopsis
Originally broadcast in autumn of 2010 as a special drama, "Strawberry Night" returns to Fuji on Tuesday nights. Based on the best selling mystery novel by Honda Tetsuya which sold over 1.5 million copies. Himekawa Reiko is a police officer working for squad 1 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. As the only female squad leader in charge of inspecting a crime scene, Reiko uncovers the mystery behind a merciless murder, a man who was found dead covered in a plastic sheet in the bushes near a pond. Reiko realizes that the crime is not an independent incident, but one that had just begun. The code "Strawberry Night" eventually surfaces from the investigations, a word that eventually leads to another police officer, an elite detective.
The drama is not only full of suspense, but breathtakingly tells a story of each character's concerns and sorrow, the troubles and tasks they must face. It takes a closer look at Reiko's mental state, the relationship between her and those surrounding her, a detective's faith, pride and sincerity towards one's profession...All in all, it's a profound human / profession drama that will touch the hearts of many.

Story
An incident occurs while the members of “Team Himekawa” under Himekawa Reiko of the First Investigative Division’s Tenth Section are on stand by at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters. 10 years ago, Yoneda Yasushi caused a train to overturn in an accident which hurt and killed more than 100 people. He is found dead at the same location as the accident, run over by a train. The dead body has been cleaved into two exact halves, and the investigation begins on both the suicide and murder angles. Through their legwork, Reiko and her team discover that the time between his departure from the pub that he usually drank at to the time his dead body was found, was short. If it was a murder, it was very likely a premeditated crime. Furthermore, they have testimonies that Yoneda had yelled at the pub that he is responsible for compensation of 860 million yen to the train operator, the injured and the families of the deceased. Miharu, the eldest daughter of Ogawa Mutsuo, the president of the association of victims and deceased which seeks compensation from Yoneda, had died a terrible death in the accident 10 years ago. The team learns that a station employee called Tokuyama Kazutaka had desperately tried to save Miharu just before her train carriage was crushed and starts investigating. Takeuchi Yuko as Himekawa Reiko
The head of Tenth Criminal Investigation Section’s Team Himekawa. Rank: Assistant Inspector. Reiko has gained power in this hierarchical society, but because the police organisation is a male-dominated society, females are castigated. She does not like that experience and fights against the prejudice. She has a special ability to reflect on investigations with her sharp intuition without stopping to question. That ends up being the clue to the case and the key to unlocking it. What she sees through her intutions is often the real nature of the criminal. She also gets too attuned to the minds of criminals that she might end up putting herself in a precarious position if she takes one wrong step. Her motto is not to be treated with contempt whoever the other party may be. Because of this, she pays attention to her outward appearance. Her suits, which are her “combat uniform”, are always of good material and texture, and dark coloured. Her black pumps with 7 cm heels are always polished. But only her favourite red Birkin is battered. Because she had it made when she was promoted to assistant inspector, its shabby state is proof of the hard-fought battles of these three years.
Nishijima Hidetoshi as Kikuta Kazuo
A detective with the Tenth Criminal Investigation Section’s Team Himekawa. Rank: Sergeant. A solemn, honest, taciturn, athletic type. He does not have a particularly good build, but he is skilled in all martial arts. He is from Tokyo, but he lives alone in the house because his parents are in the countryside for work and his older sisters are already married. Because he has been living like this for a long time, he is able to do all housework. Three years ago, he was assigned to Team Himekawa at the same time that Reiko became an Assistant Inspector. He initially was hesitant about having a female team leader, but because he could not challenge the orders of his superiors, he was reluctant to complain about the place he was assigned, and matter-of-factly accepted this younger female boss. After that, it was not long before he realised that Reiko was an excellent detective and a charming person. They pursued cases together, and his confidence in her took hold as he spent time with her. Of course he does not express his romantic feelings for her. Playing pachinko is his hobby and he would go to his regular parlour when he is not on duty or has a spare moment.
Koide Keisuke as Hayama Noriyuki
A detective with the Tenth Criminal Investigation Section’s Team Himekawa. Rank: Senior Police Officer. He was recently assigned to Team Himekawa and is still not used to the atmosphere especially have a female team leader close in age. Because he is smart, he obediently obeys orders without openly objecting to them and takes his work seriously. However, he never attempts to go to unnecessary lengths to compromise with Reiko. He is from Tokyo and attended a famous combined junior and senior high school. When he was in junior high school, he witnessed an incident that traumatised him. Aware of his own weakness, he did not go on to university and became a police officer after graduation. He seems to force himself to get absorbed in work, and studies hard for a promotion.
Maruyama Ryuhei as Yuda Kohei
A detective with the Tenth Criminal Investigation Section’s Team Himekawa. Rank: Senior Police Officer. One year ago, the youngest detective in Team Himekawa died in the line of duty and they needed people. Yuda was promoted from the police precinct by Imaizumi Haruo, the head of the section. A cheerful and honest person, he is quickly adopted as the mascot of the team. He learns the fundamentals of being a detective from Kikuta Kazuo and Ishikura and quietly makes effort in investigations. Under the influence of his late father, who had been a policeman, he became a police officer after graduating from high school. He lives with his mother and younger sister.
Endo Kenichi as Kusaka Mamoru
A senior detective with the First Investigative Division’s Tenth Criminal Investigation Section. He leads Team Kusaka. Rank: Assistant Inspector. Himekawa Reiko’s nemesis. A man whose investigation techniques and personality is the complete opposite of Reiko’s. The objective Kusaka and subjective Reiko are both outstanding detectives. They would have made a good team if they worked together. However, they are on bad terms. Because of that, their custom is to deliberately pursue different cases even though both of them are from the same section.
Takeda Tetsuya as Katsumata Kensaku
A senior detective with the First Investigative Division’s Fifth Criminal Investigation Section. Rank: Assistant Inspector. Nicknamed “Gantetsu”, he spent three years working in the Public Security Department and is a man adapt at the information war inside and outside the police organisation. There are also rumours that he was paid under the table for selling insider information. He leads Team Katsumata, but his subordinates are mere tools. He does not intefere in anything other than work, and is a maverick. He is naturally feared by his juniors and even his bosses, and shunned. But his arrest rate is the highest, so no one can complain about him. His used his connections in Public Security to check through the background of Himekawa Reiko who had distinguished herself quickly, and exert pressure on her. It is a big reason why Reiko calls him her nemesis.
Watanabe Ikkei as Hashizume Shunsuke
Director of the First Invetigative Division. Rank: Inspector. A married man with two children. He does not think well of Himekawa Reiko’s reliance on intuition in investigation. Moreover, he cannot stand her impertinence and haughty attitude even though she is a female. Because of that, it makes him want to be sarcastic against his better judgment. He does not call Reiko by her name but often uses the word “young lady”. On the other hand, Kusaka’s extreme meticulousness also annoys him. In other words, the Tenth Section is a thorn in his side. But because it is an oustanding section, he turns their arrests to his advantage to further his career.
Namase Katsuhisa as Ioka Hiromitsu
A detective of West Kameari Police Precinct’s Violent Crimes Section. Rank: Sergeant. He has investigated a couple of past cases with Team Himekawa. Because of his fake Kansai dialect and way of speaking to Himekawa Reiko as if he does not think she is his superior, he is considered a nuisance by the members of her team including Kikuta Kazuo. Reiko also gives him a cool reception, but he is unperturbed and tags along as he pleases. On the other hand, he displays a distinctive sense of smell with regards to his work, and also nonchalantly rescues Reiko at pivotal points when she is put in a tight spot. In fact, he gives the impression that he is an outstanding dective, but is shabby at any rate.
Takashima Masahiro as Imaizumi Haruo
The head of the First Investigative Division’s Tenth Criminal Investigation Section. Rank: Inspector. A man who overcame strong objections to bring Himekawa Reiko, who worked in the police precinct, to the First Investigative Division. He has a high opinion of her investigative ability and also understands her well. In fact, when he was in the field, he was just like Reiko. He is easygoing. There are times when it is difficult to know what he is thinking about, but he is secretly doing his computations.
