Anak Mami takes 'Zaiton' in her stride

SHE is not exactly a novice, though she is more of a singer than an actor.

So, it is not exactly a surprise that Nurul Huda Abdul Wahab landed the leading role in Les Copaque Production's new undertaking, Zaiton.

The movie is about the 1980s sexy singing sensation Zaiton Sameon.

Nurul's foray into the world of celluloid was way back in 1995 when she played the lead in Satay, a Grand Brilliance production.

"It seems so long ago and I can't even remember the name of the character I played," said Nurul.

"But I did work with some big names like Z. Lokman (director), and actors Faizal Hussein and Hairie Othman.

"Then I took a break from acting to concentrate on my singing."

"Like Zaiton, I went through a divorce, too," said Nurul who tied the knot with award-winning composer Ajai in 1996.

Nurul and Ajai were often said to be the happiest and most romantic couple but alas, in 2006, they split amicably.

"And I'm pretty sure that our (Zaiton and Nurul) lives as singers are not that different altogether."

Interestingly, there are not many similarities between them, except that they are both singers.

Zaiton is slightly taller and loved those revealing outfits in her heyday whereas Nurul is a little more "conservative".

However, Nurul jokingly claims to be "wider" from the waist down (read: behind). "After all, I am an anak mami!"

There is no doubt, however, that Zaiton and Nurul who burst into the scene with chart-topping ballads (Menaruh Harapan and Kerana Terluka respectively) can scale the high notes effortlessly.

Of course Nurul is expected to sing in the movie, which is why she accepted the offer.

"I would love to sing Kabut Serangkai Mawar, my favourite.

" It's written and composed by M. Nasir," said Nurul, who interviewed Zaiton in 2000 when she was a Muzik TV host.

"I had never met her before her accident. In the interview, she had difficulty remembering things. It was sad."

Zaiton, who popularised Menaruh Harapan that won the Best Song award in TV3's 1987 Juara Lagu, was involved in a major road accident in 1990.

Life has never been the same for Zaiton after that accident where her son died.

Nurul, who has five solo albums and four duets with Ajai to her name, will be releasing her 10th album soon.

Produced by Sharon Paul, the mini-album will have five new songs, plus two bonus compositions.

"I have always wanted to work with and sing Sharon's songs.

"Sharon has contributed four numbers and there is one by an Indonesian songwriter.

"I have written one too and it is called Bukan Cermin Di Hati. This is the first time I have written a song and the lyrics."

Nurul is confident that Tika Cinta, Kala Hati and Sepenuh Jiwa (all by Sharon) will go down well with radio listeners.

Nurul has just completed shooting a 40-episode telemovie called Rahsia Hati, produced by Suhan Movies.

Aaron Aziz and Rita Rudaini are the co-stars and they are all stuck in a love triangle.

"I play this teary-eyed character who secretly falls in love with her boss but he doesn't know it."

The movie career is progressing well and her albums are being steadily released and how is it on the love front? Will she tie the knot again?

"I am only 31, yet at times, I feel like someone older.

"I guess having been through marriage at such a young age has helped me grow and mature faster.

"Will I get married again? Well, if there is a guy out there who can accept me for who I am, why not?"

Dalam thread gossip Kak Makh "Famous and Infamous Person" tu tak ada pula dibayangkan untuk filem Zaiton ni. Ayu OIAM tu memang sesuai untuk versi remaja. Kenapa tak buat open casting untuk pilih calon-calon versi yang dewasa? Aku rasa Mislina Mustapha (Anak Halal), Farhan AF4 atau Ning Baizura boleh menjadi Zaiton Sameon dewasa
