http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umar_at_Fatimah's_house
Umar at Fatimah's house is an event recorded in Shi'a as well as Sunni Islamic[1][2] books of hadith (traditions) where Fatimah, daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, was physically abused by the second Sunni caliph, Umar. It is believed the event caused her to miscarry her child and eventually led to her death soon after.[3][4] Sunni Muslims deny the event occurred[5], though is it prominently featured in early Sunni books, namely al-Tabari's History of the Prophets and Kings, ibn al-Athir's The Complete History, al-Baladhuri's Genealogies of the Nobles and Mas'udi's Ithbat ul-Wasiyya.
Background
Immediately following the death of Prophet Muhammad, and while Ali and Muhammad's daughter Fatimah were burying him[6], Abu Bakr, Umar, the Ansar and the tribal leaders of Medina and Mecca held a secret meeting at Saqifah to do decide who would succeed Muhammad as leader of the Muslim state, disregarding what most of the early Muslims, the Muhajirun, believe to be the appointment of Ali by Muhammad as his successor at Ghadir Khumm.
Event
According to historical tradition, Abu Bakr sent Umar and a group of armed men to Fatimah's house to obtain Ali's allegiance. Umar and Khalid ibn al-Walid threatened to burn the house down should she and Ali refuse to come out and pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr[7][8]. The episode about the attack on Fatimah’s house by Umar and his supporters is a subject of considerable debate between Sunnis and Shi’ites. Historical sources give details about the attack, and describe how Fatimah, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, was injured, and allegedly beaten, in the attack, resulting in her miscarriage.[9] Fatima never recovered from her injuries and died soon thereafter [10]. As per her will, her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib, buried her in night so that Abu Bakr and Umar could not attend her funeral[11].
Narration of the events in early Sunni historical books
History of al-Tabari
The Sunni historian Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, in his Tarikhlink writes:“ Umar Ibn al-Khattab came to the house of Ali. Talhah and Zubayr and some of the immigrants were also in the house. Umar cried out: "By God, either you come out to render the oath of allegiance, or I will set the house on fire." al-Zubair came out with his sword drawn. As he stumbled (upon something), the sword fell from his hand so they jumped over him and seized him." ”
—al-Tabari, Tarikh
The translator’s commentary on this event provides the following background:
“Although the timing of the events is not clear, it seems that ‘Ali and his group came to know about the Saqifah after what had happened there. At this point, his supporters gathered in Fatima’s house. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, fully aware of ‘Ali’s claims and fearing a serious threat from his supporters, summoned him to the mosque to swear the oath of allegiance. ‘Ali refused, and so the house was surrounded by an armed band led by Abu Bakr and Umar, who threatened to set it on fire if ‘Ali and his supporters refused to come out and swear allegiance to Abu Bakr. The scene grew violent and Fatima was furious." [12]
ShahrastaniAl-Shahrastani writes in his book Al-Milal wa al-Nihal(link):“ Umar kicked Fatima's stomach on the day of allegiance until she miscarried and he yelled: Burn her house and whoever is in it except Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan and al-Husayn.
al-Mas'udial-Mas'udi, in his book Ithbat ul-Wasiyya, writes:
They attacked [Ali], burned his door and took him out by force and pressed [Fatima] against the door until she miscarried Muhsin.
He also writes:
While addressing the people Abu Bakr said: “…of the three mistakes that I committed, one of them is that during my time Fatima's house was broken into..” [13]
Ibn Abd RabbohIbn Abed Rabboh, in his book Al-Iqd ul-Fareed, writes:
As for Ali, Abbas and Zubair, they stayed in the house of Fatima until Abu Bakr sent Umar to get them out of Fatima's house and told him: if they refuse, fight them. He took a torch to burn the house and Fatima met him and told him: are you here to burn our house? He said: yes, or you enter what the Ummah has entered (i.e swear allegiance).
Tarikh al-Ya’qoubi
“..When Abu Bakr and Umar heard the news that a party of the Ansar and the Muhajirin have gathered with ‘Ali at the house of the daughter of the Prophet, they went with a group of people and attacked the house…

According to most Sunni Muslims, this narration, though reported by leading early Sunni historians, is a complete lie. |

Salawat

Now one should ponder that upto this point what did Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) do wrong. They did not claim nor did they demand Khilaafat for themselves, rather after explaining to the Ansaar, Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) proposed Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Abu Ubaidah ibnul Jarrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) to be appointed as the Khalifah and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) proposed Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) to be the Khalifah and all the present Muhaajir and Ansaar Sahabah accepted the proposal of Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). It is not proven from any authentic text that Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) has conspired to do something and gathered the Ansaar at Saqeefa Bani Saaidah and their going there was part of the conspiracy. If anybody claims this then they should bring forth their proofs. This is also the reason why Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) had termed this Khilaafat as a coincidence during his Khilaafat because they had no idea in their mind nor was it pre-planned. Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other Muhaajir Sahabah did not take part in this Bay抋t because they were engaged in the burial arrangements of Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) and apparently they did not even know what transpired outside of the house. One cannot say that Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other Muhaajir Sahabah抯 failure to take the Bay抋t was because they disagreed with it, rather this is the reason why those Sahabah who were not present at the time of the Bay抋t were not taunted. A general Majlis took place the following day in the Masjid-un-Nabawi for everybody to take the Bay抋t so that nobody could raise any objection to Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) being the Khalifah and that he did this in secret. It is also incorrect to level accusations against Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) of not calling Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other Sahabah to Saqeefa Bani Saaidah because when they left the home of Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) they did not know what was going to happen, neither did they go there with the intention of obtaining the Khilaafat themselves. Whatever happened at Saqeefa Bani Saaidah was a coincidence and unexpected.
It is proven from few narrations that after the incident of Saqeefa Bani Saaidah, Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) returned to Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam)抯 house to in order to assist with the burial arrangements. On the following day Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) sat on the pulpit in the Masjid-un-Nabawi and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) stood in front of the Sahabah and said a few words and also excused himself for what he had said on hearing of the demise of Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam). He further said that: 揜asoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) has passed away and you have the Qur抋n with you. |
