Abg Johari: Have Our Own Satellite To Enhance ICT Devt Date: 21 August 2014 Source: Borneo Post Online
KUCHING: The state’s information communications technology (ICT) development can be further enhanced if it has its own communications satellite.
In relating his personal view, Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said it was possible for the state or through joint partnership with Sabah to send satellite into orbit besides establishing central servers that could cater for the needs of the region.
“The cost of a satellite is about RM2 billion and if we can have our own satellite, we will have a platform to better position ourselves in the new global economy. With that, I’m sure we can become one of the major players in the world economy,” he told a press conference after officiating at the opening of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) 6th International Borneo Business Conference 2014 here yesterday.
Abang Johari said there had been a lot of changes in the global economic landscape and the state to position itself correctly.
“In this, I think we should give priority in where to invest. If I have my way, I would do so in a satellite system.
“I admit that we are still lacking in terms of (communication) infrastructure. We are still using Streamyx and Unifi which can only be used at selected areas,” he said.
For that matter, he said the state had requested an additional allocation of RM500 million from the federal government to improve the state’s ICT infrastructure, adding that once the state was equipped with the latest technologies such as fibre optic broadband, it could position itself as one of the important players in the new economy.
He added that besides biodiversity, the state had the advantage in ICT, especially in the fields of graphics, programming and software engineering.
According to Abang Johari, ICT and biotechnology would be Sarawak’s strength in competing in the new world economy. Other drivers would include nanotechnology and neurotechnology.
On another subject, he said besides agreeing to offer the state government a 10 per cent stake in MLNG 4, he said the federal government should also look into the state’s interest in other facilities for the oil and gas industry.
“Bintulu Port Authority, for example, we have increased our stake there already.
“The federal and state governments have also more or less agreed in principle how we want to get more from the oil and gas (industry) but not necessary through royalty but by increasing our stake.”
