Yes, you can eat ripe mangoes while you’re pregnant.

Mangoes are very nutritious. They are rich in fibre, which can help prevent constipation. They are also rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B6 and folic acid which are all vital nutrients for your pregnancy.

Mangoes are also naturally sweet. They contain more sugar than most fruits (about 15 grams of sugar per 100 grams). This makes them a delicious alternative to cakes and pastries when you’re craving a sugary treat.

BabyCenter expert Dr Patrick Chia points out that mangoes have an average glycaemic index (GI) of 51. This is considered low (GI measures the effect of food on blood sugars). "Just remember that foods with high GI are not as good for you when compared to those with low GI, especially if you have gestational diabetes," he says. But while mango can be considered a low-GI food, Dr Chia cautions mums-to-be to stick to the "everything in moderation" rule.

This holds especially true for mangoes as they are high in calories (about 75 calories per 100 grams).

If you like your mangoes in a smoothie, shake or as part of a dessert, then watch out for the added sugars and calories that come in the form of sweeteners and cream. Dried mangoes and other candied mangoes have added sweeteners, so eat them only as occasional treats.
