Leehom to carry torch for 2012 Olympics
Taiwanese-American pop star Leehom will again be a torchbearer for the summer Olympic Games in London, making him the only person in Mandarin pop circles to take part in the event twice, his record company said yesterday.
The pop idol was selected as one of the 8,000 Olympic torchbearers after participating in the torch relay for the 2008 Beijing Games.
He is also the only Asian star to take part in the relay.
"All the world will be watching enthusiastically and is looking forward to the Olympic Games. It is a platform that makes people believe in world peace. I am very honored to take part in this and cheer for the athletes," Leehom was quoted as saying.
The company said the pop maverick, one of the best-selling singers in the Mandopop scene, was chosen by the organizers because of his dedication to charity work and environmental protection, which is a major feature of the London Olympics.
Leehom will fly to Manchester in June to carry the flame on his leg of the relay.
