Depressed lecturer takes own life

KUCHING: A lecturer of a public higher learning institution, said to be suffering from depression, was found dead in the kitchen of her home on Wednesday evening with a knife lodged in her throat.
District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said police have classified the incident as sudden death, pending the outcome of a post mortem as initial investigation did not indicate any foul play.
He revealed yesterday that the deceased Azizah Sapawi, 42, was discovered by her husband when he returned home at the couple’s house at Matang-Batu Kawah Road at 6.15pm.
She was said to have been suffering from depression over the past two-and-a-half weeks, and had been taken on Monday to see a private doctor who issued a two-day medical leave and advised the husband to have Azizah evaluated at Sentosa Hospital.
The husband, a technician at a private higher learning institution, had earlier picked up the couple’s three sons, aged five to 11, from his mother’s house before arriving home to discover the front gate locked.
He sounded the car horn a few times before scaling the gate and opening it from the inside after his wife failed to respond.
Roslan said the husband sensed something was not right and went upstairs to search for his wife, only to hear his eldest son screaming in the kitchen.
He rushed back down and found the victim lifeless and covered in blood in a storeroom in the kitchen.
A police team comprising senior investigators and a forensics team converged on the house after being called.
Investigators discovered a small kitchen knife lodged in the victim’s throat, as well as a wound on her right forearm believed to have been caused by a power drill that was found next to the body.
Roslan further disclosed that police retrieved a hand-written note purportedly left behind by the deceased which said ‘Suami saya tidak bersalah. Saya stress’ (My husband is innocent. I’m stressed), adding there were no signs of forced entry at the house.
Meanwhile, a colleague of the deceased, who rushed to the house upon learning of the incident, expressed her disbelief at Azizah’s death, describing the victim as a friendly and cheerful person who was well-liked at her workplace.
Police are continuing their investigation pending the post mortem result.
