Nelly Furtado serves up first Lifestyle leak with “Girlfriend in this City”
Yesterday an unmastered demo of a new Nelly Furtado song surfaced online. Titled “Girlfriend in this City”, the track is believed to be from the recording sessions of her upcoming album Lifestyle.
Even in its unfinished form you can hear that “Girlfriend in this City” is a little more organic like Nelly’s first two albums, but still doesn’t quite fit into the acoustic based Folklore or the folky R&B of her debut Whoa Nelly, and it definitely doesn’t have the sleek urban-pop sheen of her commercial smash Loose.
I love the song and it’s a little pop, so I get the feeling that Lifestyle will sound like a melding pot of all her previous albums, with a few new things thrown in for good measure.
The new album is currently due out in May, and will feature production from Ryan Tedder, Tiesto, and Salaam Remi.
The star debuted her first album Whoa, Nelly! in 2000, and has released several more records since. On her 2009 LP Mi Plan she sang in Spanish, after finding it easier to write in the language. She has a new release provisionally coming out next year which is in English, and Nelly is glad to be singing in the language again.
“Well, I found myself thinking, ‘OK, I’ve said all I want to say in English for a while.’ It’s funny because now that I’m recording in English all the time, it’s almost like I broke up with a boyfriend and got back together,” she laughed. “I broke up with English for a while, but we’re recently got it back together and it feels good.”
Nelly writes lyrics based on her own life, saying that’s all she knows how to do. She has started trying to think of a character when she pens songs, but always finds her own experiences end up being featured.
“I write from the heart. I think I’ve learn a little bit more about role-playing in the last couple of albums but usually ideas come from real experiences,” she told Stylist magazine. “On the Spanish album, I have a song about not having enough time in the day to get everything done before going on a date with your partner. And the day after I turned 30 I wrote a song about that experience too.”
