Blackpool FC manager Ian Holloway reflects on Chelsea FC defeat: "We would have lost no matter what we did"
Blackpool FC manager Ian Holloway has admitted his side never stood a chance of picking up a point against Chelsea, as they were outclassed in a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
The Seasiders boss opted for a more defensive approach for the trip to the Premier League leaders, as Alex Baptiste replaced Brett Ormerod in the starting line-up.
Holloway revealed after the game that he expected his team to lose, regardless of the system he adopted.
"I would have been silly to think we did not have to do something different against Chelsea but I think we would have lost no matter what we did," he told BBC Sport.
"The tactical change did not work at all.β
"I should have gone back [to our normal attacking system] earlier but when I went back to what we do the game was over by then.β
"No matter what we do against the top teams we are light years off them. They are awesome with their mental approach and the way they go about games." |

Ian Holloway Thrilled As Blackpool Shock Liverpool
Boss hails 'dream' victory on Merseyside
By Adithya Ananth Oct 4, 2010 12:33:00 AM
BPL, Liverpool and Blackpool, Luke Varney and Gary Taylor-Fletcher
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway is thrilled to have beaten Liverpool at Anfield.
The Seasiders made to trip to Merseyside and locked horns with Roy Hodgson's men and emerged triumphant with a 2-1 score line at the end of 90 minutes plus added time.
Charlie Adam opened the proceedings after scoring a penalty, while Luke Varney doubled the advantage just before the break. Reds defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos managed to score through a header and put his side within reach of carving out a draw, but resolute defending from Holloway's charges saw them secure an impressive victory.
The home crowd applauded the Blackpool players off the pitch, and Holloway told reporters: ""It is one of the dreams I've had for years.
"When the fans were singing You'll Never Walk Alone - it's my dad's favourite song but he's no longer with me - I was singing myself and it was a bit emotional.
"This is not far off the home of football - these supporters have seen some of the best football over the years and in my era as a player there was no better team in the world.
"The boys made me so proud and for that set of supporters to clap us off that is all I wanted - that was what my dream was last night.
"This is a fantastic moment for Blackpool."
Coming back to ground level, Holloway admitted that the sight of Reds striker Fernando Torres being substituted early on gave his side a confidence boost.
"To see the best striker in the world limp off after a few minutes, I can't tell you what that did for us," he added.
"His mere presence is awesome so to see him come off played into our hands and helped us." |
