Arashi’s Sakurai Sho to be the MC for TBS’ new variety show along with Ariyoshi Hiroiki
Arashi’s Sakurai Sho will be the MC on TBS‘ new talk variety show “FACE TV (tentative title)” along with comedian Ariyoshi Hiroiki.
This will be the first time for Sakurai to be the MC of a variety program alone without his members. According to the officials, some seasonal guests from various fields, such as show biz, sports, or the academic field, will appear on the show, to share their stories.
Sakurai is serving as the Monday’s caster on “NEWS ZERO” (NTV), and also served as the main caster for NTV’ “2012 London Olympic.” Also, as Arashi, he will be participating on NHK’s “Kohaku Uta Gassen” as the white team’s host. It seems he was appointed as the MC for his has abundant experiences under his belt.
On the same time slot, TBS has been airing Arashi’s variety show “Himitsu no Arashi-chan!” since April of 2008, and according to a participant from TBS, “As it’ll be reaching its 5th year, it (Himitsu no Arashi-chan!) has played an important role, and has reached a certain point as a popular show. The time slot will be getting more powerful in a new form.”
“FACE TV (tentative title)” will start airing in April of next year (every Thursday at 10:00 pm).

V6 to release a new album “Oh! My! Goodness!” in February
On December 27th, V6 held a release event for their new single “ROCK YOUR SOUL” at Roppongi Hills Arena, and announced that they would be releasing a new album titled “Oh! My! Goodness!” on February 20th.
When Inohara Yoshihiko said, “We made this album imagining everybody’s happy faces!”, great shouts of joy arose from the audience of 3,000.
This will be their 12th overall album and the first album release in 3 years. It will consist a total of 13 tracks including their 37th single “only dreaming/Catch” to the latest single ”ROCK YOUR SOUL.” It will also include “Supernova” which was only performed during their 2011 live tour.
There will be three editions, limited editions A & B that will come with a DVD, and a regular edition. The DVD for the limited edition A will contain the music videos for “Supernova” and one of the tracks “Otona Guyz”, as well as the footage from “ROCK YOUR SOUL” release event, while limited edition B’s DVD will contain the prologue video for their upcoming concert tour, the interview, and also the footage of the members’ party for the album’s completion.

Arashi to be the main personality for this year’s 24-Hour TV
It was announced that popular group Arashi has been chosen as the main personality for NTV’s annual charity telethon “24-Hour Television 36 Ai wa Chikyuu wo Sukuu.” This will mark the 4th time for the group to serve as the main personality, and moreover, they are the first to take the role for 2 consecutive years.
The announcement was made on the New Year’s day special program “Kourei Gantan wa TOKIO×Arashi Arashi ni Shiyagare Kaibutsu Bangumi ga Arashi de Daifukkatsu! Arashi, Ichi kara Yarinaoshiyagare SP.”
The theme for this year’s 24-Hour TV is “Nippon tte…? ~Kono Kuni no Katachi~” (lit. “What is Japan…? ~The shape of this country~”). The premise will be to think about the ’shape of this country’ by learning both the good and negative aspects of Japan.
Arashi commented, “We feel a huge responsibility for serving as the main personality for 2 consecutive years, especially during the Nihon Television’s 60th anniversary year since its establishment. We would like to spend a long time to prepare for the 24-Hour Television under this theme. Every time, we were impressed by the program, but this year, we also want to make it as the program that we can encourage the viewers.”

Arashi announces the release of a new double A-side single
It was announced that Arashi’s new double A-side single “Calling/Breathless” is set for release on March 6th.
As reported earlier, one of the title tracks “Calling” has been chosen as the theme song for member Aiba Masaki’s starring drama “Last Hope” which will start airing on January 15th through Fuji TV. The song is themed with the equality in life and hope, and has an impressive band sound with somewhat nostalgic guitar phrase.
The other title track “Breathless” is said to be an aggressive dance number.

TOKIO to release a new single in February
It has been announced that TOKIO will release their first single for 2013 (currently untitled) on February 20th.
The title track will be used as the theme song for upcoming drama “Nakuna, Hara-chan” which stars Nagase Tomoya.
The single will have both limited edition that will include a DVD and regular edition.

Katori Shingo & Anne to co-star in a new drama ‘Kasuka na Kanojo’
It was announced that SMAP’s Katori Shingo will be starring in a new drama “Kasuka na Kanojo” (tentative title) that will start airing in April. In the drama, Katori will play a junior high school teacher “Koyama Akira” who has an ability to sense ghosts, and Anne will co-star with him as a ghost named “Akane” who used to be a teacher. It’s a love comedy in which Akira faces several problems happening at the school together with Akane.

“Koyama Akira” has a traumatic experience from his previous school in which his actions in response to solving a bullying problem did not work out. When he transfers to a new school, he sets his mind on staying out of problems. When he moves into a new apartment, he encounters “Akane”, a ghost living in his apartment.
While being pushed around by Akane’s escapade and her advice from a “dead person’s point of view”, Akira gradually finds out what’s important as a teacher by facing several problems and solving them.

Katori commented, “I hate ghosts. I’m scared of them. So I’ve kept avoiding a job that was related to ghosts until now, but I never expected the day when I would fall in love with a ghost, would come…” He continued, “While getting help from the love and comedy parts, I will try to enjoy the filming with the ghost! I will do my best to become a teacher loved enough by the students so that they run up to me while crying and saying ‘Sensei~!’ in the last episode! The first thing I have to do is to go attend a purification ceremony!!”
On the other hand, Anne who has played as a monster in drama “Yokai Ningen Bem” (NTV), will also play as a witch in “xxxHOLIC” (to begin airing on 2/24 on WOWOW), and now will play as ghost in this drama, said, “I accomplished the ‘full combo’ now! There’s nothing to be afraid of anymore!” Regarding her co-star, Katori, she said, “Even though I have worked with him several times in variety shows, this is my first time to co-star with him in acting, so my heart is fluttering. There will be many scenes that only two of us appear in, which makes me nervous, but I will put everything I have into the role!”
“Kasuka na Kanojo” will air on KTV/Fuji TV starting in April (every Tuesday at 10:00 pm).

Kusanagi Tsuyoshi & Horikita Maki to co-star in stage play “A Tale of Two Cities”
SMAP’s Kusanagi Tsuyoshi is starring in the stage play “A Tale of Two Cities“, and Horikita Maki will be playing the heroine. This will be the first time for them to co-star with each other, and it will also be the second stage play for Horikita to appear in since her first, “Jeanne d’Arc.”
“A Tales of Two Cities” is based on Charles Dickens‘ novel. The original story is set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution, but the stage adaptation will be set in ancient Japan and will depict a tragic love.
Kusanagi, who appears in TV programs and movies as well, said, “This is the stage play that is full of challenges for me. I will try my hardest to create the best entertainment together with Horikita Maki-san and the other cast members.”
Horikita also commented, “This will be my second stage play. During my first one, I found the time I created with the audience in front of me attractive. In order to make the audience enjoy the play fully, there are still many problems for me to solve, but I will put my all into it to make it an unforgettable stage.”
Other cast members include Ozawa Yukiyoshi (as Kusanagi’s rival in love), Osugi Ren (as Horikita’s father), Hashimoto Jun, Takahashi Keiko, and Minagawa Sarutoki. Theatrical company “MONO”s Tsuchida Hideo will be in charge of the script, while Itagaki Kyoichi will be directing. Also, Iwashiro Taro who has worked with Kusanagi in a drama, will handle the music.
Stage play “A Tale of Two Cities” will open at TOKYU THEATRE Orb during April 3rd ~ 30th.

Sakurai Sho to star in new drama “Kazoku Game”
Arashi member Sakurai Sho will be starring in the upcoming Fuji TV drama “Kazoku Game.”
“Kazoku Game” is based on Honma Yohei’s award-winning novel of the same name, and it has been adapted into live-action movies several times with one starring late actor Matsuda Yusaku, and two special dramas starring Kaga Takeshi as well as two drama series starring Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi.
The movie adaptation especially, which was directed by late film director Morita Yoshimitsu, received several awards.
The story revolves around an eccentric home tutor named “Yoshimoto” (played by Sakurai), who is hired to teach the second son of the Numata family. While being tossed around by the weird and unconventional home tutor, the remedial student and his family gradually start changing. Though the previous movie/dramas featured a fiercely competitive high school entrance examinations as its main theme, the 2013 version will also feature some modern problems like bullying and school refusal.
Apparently, Sakurai has had a home tutor in his actual life when he was in junior high school and high school. He stated, “I hope to reflect on my memories from those days [into] the drama, and I want to make it a drama that gives you a tinglly feeling when watching it with your family.” Regarding his “bizarre” role, he said, “I’m already excited that I will be able to show a new side of me.”
“Kazoku Game” will begin airing on Fuji TV (every Wednesday at 10:00 pm) starting in April.

Details on SMAP’s upcoming single revealed
The details on SMAP’s upcoming single, which will be released on February 27th, have been revealed.
SMAP’s 49th single will be a double A-side. One of the tracks, titled “Mistake!“, has been picked up as the theme song for Fuji TV’s “SMAP×SMAP“. It’s described as a pop tune that portrays the strategies of love between a man and a woman. It was written by Ishiwatari Junji, composed by HIKARI, and arranged by CMJK.
The single will be released in four different versions: Limited Edition A, Limited Edition B, Limited Edition C, and a Regular Edition. Limited Edition A will come with a DVD containing the music video and making-of footage for “Mistake!” as well as nail stickers.

TOKIO to release a new single in March
It’s been revealed that TOKIO will be releasing a new single titled “Tegami” on March 20th.
“Tegami” will be used as the theme song for the upcoming film, ‘Daijoubu 3 Kumi‘, which is scheduled to open in theaters on March 23rd. It’s written by YUKI, composed by Tsutaya Koichi, and arranged by Noma Kosuke.
The single will be released in both limited and regular editions. The limited edition will come with a DVD containing the music video for “Tegami”.

Arashi’s Ninomiya Kazunari to host own variety program
Popular group Arashi’s Ninomiya Kazunari will have his own variety program titled “Nino-san” starting in April on NTV. This will mark his first time serving as the sole MC.
The program is said to be a “matching trial program” in which 5 different directors from NTV will come up with a new plan every week, and they will find out which director would be the best-suited to work with Ninomiya. There will be a total of 10 episodes, and they will pick the best attempt among those episodes. Then, the chosen episode will become a regular program, which will start airing sometime after this fall.
The highlight of the program will be what kind of new charm Ninomiya would show, and which director could enhance Ninomiya’s charm the most.
The 5 directors include Uetoshi Ryuta (“Arashi ni Shiyagare“), Uchida Hidemi (“Sekai no Hate made Itte Q!“), Nasu Taisuke (“Guruguru Ninety-nine“), Hashimoto Kazuaki (“Hiru Nandesu!“), and Miyamori Hiroki (“Star☆Draft Kaigi“).
Ninomiya commented, “So this is the first time I will be the sole MC. I am very happy honestly! Everything will be a new experience for me, but I will try my best so that I won’t be the one who fails the tryout.”
According to the producer, “I’ve always felt Ninomiya-san’s high response capability, and I wanted to see him serving as MC by himself. I hope it can show the viewers a new side of Ninomiya-san, which he does not even notice himself.”
“Nino-san” will be aired in a late-night time slot, but its broadcasting time has not yet been decided.

Domoto Tsuyoshi to release his 1st cover album
It was announced that Domoto Tsuyoshi (of KinKi Kids) will release his first cover album titled “Kaba” on May 8th.
The cover album consists of the masterpieces from various artists whom he especially has intense feelings for, self-cover of his solo debut song “Machi“, a new song “amagoi“, as well as the re-arranged version of “Yasashisa wo Mune ni Daite” which was written and composed by Domoto himself about 16 years ago.
There will be a limited edition that comes with a DVD, and a regular edition.

SMAP’s new song chosen as theme song for ‘N sta’
SMAP’s new song, “Yes we are“, has been chosen as the theme song for TBS news program, ‘N sta‘, starting on April 1st.
“Yes we are” was written and composed by Sakai Yu and arranged by Mori Toshiyuki. It’s a large scale message song about human love.
Inagaki Goro commented, “We are very happy to receive this opportunity for our song to be used in the news program, ‘N sta’. It would make us happy if people who watch it become cheerful through this song.”
The release date for “Yes we are” is undecided at this time.

SMAP to provide the theme song for Katori Shingo’s new drama
SMAP’s new song, “Joy!!“, has been chosen as the theme song for Katori Shingo’s new drama, ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘. This song was written and composed by Akai Kouen’s Tsuno Maisa.
‘Kasuka na Kanojo’ is a love comedy that is set at a junior high school. Katori plays a junior high school teacher, who regains his passion for teaching after meeting a ghost that used to be a teacher (played by Anne). Maeda Atsuko and Kis-My-Ft2’s Kitayama Hiromitsu will also star in the drama.
“Joy!!” matches the worldview of the drama and it was chosen after the members of SMAP and staff discussed that it was a suitable as the drama’s theme song. Katori commented, “From the first time I heard it, I thought that it was perfect for this drama that is set at a school. I think it’s a song that allows not only one person, but everyone to take a step forward with the magic words, ‘Joy!! Joy!!’.”
The song was arranged by Kano Yoko. Johnny’s Jr. members, such as Morimoto Shintaro, Jinguji Yuta, and Iwahashi Genki, who star in the drama as students and also take part in the chorus.

It was revealed that Arashi will be releasing a new single titled “Endless Game” on May 29th. This is the group’s 41st single, and the title track is being used as the theme song for Fuji TV’s ongoing drama “Kazoku Game“, in which member Sakurai Sho is starring.

Sakurai Sho to host 12-hour live broadcast special music program
NTV will air a special music program “THE MUSIC DAY Ongaku no Chikara” on July 6th to commemorate their 60th anniversary since its launching, and Arashi member Sakurai Sho will serve as the main host.
Just like NTV’s annual telethon “24-Hour Television”, ”THE MUSIC DAY Ongaku no Chikara” is also planned to be their annual special music program. The broadcast network plans to hold a survey that is related to the theme of the year, masterpieces chosen from the survey will be introduced.
This year’s theme will be “The masterpieces that encouraged Japanese people”, and it will be broadcast live for 12 hours, which will be the longest music program to ever air. The main venue is the Makuhari Messe, and many great artists will gather there to perform. Archive footage from the past 60 years will also be broadcast.
Sakurai commented, “It was surprising enough that I would be the main host for the special music program for this summer, but knowing that it would be 12 hours long, I am still in doubt. Without getting crushed by the dignity of its title, the 60th anniversary since launching, I will try my hardest to serve this important task!!”
NTV is currently asking for requests for the “masterpieces that encouraged Japanese people” on their official site.
Additionally, there will be a music event “THE MUSIC DAY LIVE presented by ‘ZERO’” (charged), to be held on July 7th, at the same venue.

SMAP to release their 50th single in June
SMAP will be releasing their 50th single, ‘Joy!!‘, on June 5th.
As reporter earlier, the title track is currently being used as the theme song for Kansai TV/Fuji TV’s tv drama series, ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘, starring member Katori Shingo. It’s a positive number that was written and composed by Akai Kouen’s Tsuno Maisa.
The video shoot for “Joy!!” on April 24th included participation by 1,000 extras and dancers, along with the students from teacher Kamiya Akira’s (played by Katori) class. World renown dance artist KENTO MORI was in charge of the choreography.
Regarding the collaboration with SMAP, KENTO commented, “Together with SMAP, I wanted to express the power of dance that goes beyond one’s occupation and religion connecting the hearts of people.” This PV can be found in the single’s bonus DVD.

KinKi Kids' Domoto Tsuyoshi to team up with Fukuda Yuichi once again for a new horror comedy drama

KinKi Kids' Domoto Tsuyoshi will star in a new TBS drama "Tenma-san ga Yuku" that will begin airing in July. This will be the first time in about four years for Domoto to star in a drama, and he'll be teaming up with Fukuda Yuichi (Kodomo Keisatsu", "Ore wa Mada Honki Dashitenai dake") who has worked with Domoto previously in "33pun Tantei" series.
"Tenma-san ga Yuku" is a horror comedy written and directed by Fukuda himself. The protagonist "Tenma" (Domoto), who has a hereditary ability to get in contact with ghosts, is the second president of a company to rid ghosts, however, contrary to his ability, he is a big coward. Since Tenma has no guts to exterminate the ghosts, he solves the ghost extermination requests by listening to what the ghosts say then tries to dispel their regrets or persuades them softly.
Other cast members include Kawaguchi Haruna (as the female employee at Tenma's company), Minagawa Sarutoki (as the head clerk at Tenma's company), Serina (as Tenma's neighbor who runs after him), Sato Jiro (as Tenma's deceased father who appears in his dream), and Morisaki Hiroyuki (as a detective who snoops around Tenma).
Not only starring in the drama, Domoto will also sing the theme song which he created after receiving a request from Fukuda. Moreover, he is also in charge of the opening instrumental song for the drama.
"Tenma-san ga Yuku" will be aired on TBS' drama NEO time slot starting in July (every Monday at 12:28 am).

Arashi tops "Total Sales" & "DVD Sales" categories in Oricon's first half of 2013 ranking

Popular group Arashi dominated the "Total Sales by artist" and "DVD sales" categories of Oricon's "first half of 2013 ranking."
This "Total Sales by artist" is the ranking of artists who have the highest amount of the total sales in CDs (both singles and albums), DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs.
This is the first time in 3 years for Arashi to top this category since they last topped it back in 2010 with a total sales figure of 8.43 billion yen (approximately $86,213,610 USD). In the first half of 2013, Arashi has already exceeded a sales figure of 10 billion (approximately $102,227,000 USD) yen on the strength of the hits of their singles as well as the music DVDs.
Behind Arashi was AKB48 who ranked in 2nd place with sales figure of 6.86 billion yen (approximately $70,157,220 USD). Momoiro Clover Z who was ranked in 3rd place, is worthy of special mention, as they made a big leap from 18th place during the same period last year.
Momoiro Clover Z's total sales for the first half of this year reached 3.92 billion yen (approximately $40,089,840 USD) which is 3.6 times more than in 2012, and it allowed them to grab a spot in the top 3 ranking for the very first time.
For the "DVD Sales" category, Arashi dominated first and second place with "ARASHI ARAFES" (released in December 2012, sold 786,000 copies) and "ARASHI LIVE TOUR Popcorn" (released in April, sold 681,000 copies) respectively.
Moreover, the total number of copies sold for the "ARASHI ARAFES" set an all-time record for the first half of a year, breaking their own record of 785,000 copies which they achieved with "ARASHI 10-11 TOUR 'Scene' ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ STADIUM" back in 2011. Also, their total number of copies sold for music DVD for the first half of a year of 1,523,000 copies, is also a new all-time record which once again broke their own record of 1,015,000 copies.

Arashi announces 'ARAFES' at National Olympic Stadium & 5-Major Dome tour + new album

On June 30th, Arashi held an event titled, "Arashi no Wakuwaku Gakkou ~Mainichi ga Kagayaku 5-tsu no Jugyou~" at the Tokyo Dome, and made some surprise announcements which shook the entire venue with loud cheers from the audience of 45,000.'
It was near the end of the event when Aiba Masaki began to speak, "Attention please. We have an announcement to make." Then, "ARAFES" showed up on the big screen, and it was announced that there would be a 2-day live concert at the National Olympic Stadium on September 21st and 22nd.
"ARAFES" is a type of live concert in which the set list is based on the fans' requests. Ninomiya Kazunari stated, "We will perform 10 songs from our singles, 10 songs from our albums, and 10 songs from our coupling songs." This will be the 6th consecutive year for the group to hold a live concert at the venue.
As it was an unexpected announcement, the shouts of joy from the audience did not stop. However, it wasn't the only surprise. The second announcement was that Arashi's 12th album was set for release this fall. Aiba told the audience, "We just started working on it, so it's not even titled yet, but please look forward to it everyone."
Leader Ohno Satoshi followed up by saying, "We made an announcement about our album release, which means..." It was the cue to the announcement of their 5-major dome tour. There will be a total of 16 stages for the dome tour, and including the 2-days live at the National Olympic Stadium, 870,000 fans are expected to be attending their live concerts. The dome tour will kick off on November 8th, and will end on December 22nd.
Matsumoto Jun said to the audience, "It's great to see you guys excited. We will work hard on the preparation, so please look forward to it."
At the end of the event, Sakurai Sho shouted, "We'll see you again at the National Olympic Stadium!"
