KARA’s new song, “Step”, was released on September 6 and is seizing all the music ranking charts. However, a video was posted online, questioning if a part of the song was plagiarized.
"Step”, is KARA's first release in Korea in 10 months. Some netizens are suspicious of the originality of the song because “Step” sounds like “One of Us” by Joan Osborne. From 2:27~2:40, they claim, seems to have been from the Osborne’s song. The video that mixed the two songs and music videos has been going around the Internet.
Doubting originality is not a new accusation for KARA. Last year with the song Lupin, netizens have questioned if it was plagiarized but proven false. This time as well, “Step” is not a plagiarized song.
An expert on the subject said “In order for the declaration of plagiarism to successfully take place, there is a certain standard in how much the song sounds the same but ‘Step’ does not apply to those standards. Only the rhythm sounds alike but it cannot be considered for plagiarism.”

Additionally, Mnet scored an exclusive interview with KARA, to gear up for their promotions for
their title song "Step"!
In the video, KARA introduces “Step” and they also give their insight to a few other tracks on their 3rd official album. Fans will be able to find an acoustic version of a previously released ballad, as well as a Korean version of one of their hit Japanese ballads.
KARA also asked fans for a favor, saying, “There isn’t a name for our dance yet, so we would like it if all of you could name it for us!”
The interview then continued with the members’ thoughts on each other’s unique charms.
Seungyeon on Gyuri:
“Wherever she is, Gyuri overflows with confidence even to the very tips of her fingers. But
because she is always showing people her confident side, there are some charms that people have not been able to see. She is very feminine in contrast to her refreshing personality, and she is a person who always tries to think of ways to take care of her dongsaengs.”
Hara on Seungyeon:
“Seungyeon seems younger than her age. Even though she is very small in stature, her hard working and ambitious nature make up for it making her look bigger.”
Jiyoung on Hara:
“If you just look at her outer appearance, she’s very pretty and petite, and she’s the fantasy of many men with her long straight hair. She just seems like a very pretty feminine type. However in comparison, she has a cool personality and takes really good care of the people around her, and these things seem to make up the charm that she has. The more you look at her, more and more charms seem to emerge.” Nicole added, “She gets more fun the longer you look at her”.
Gyuri on Nicole:
“Nicole is a health beauty and loves to exercise, so she has a very pretty and toned body. She also has a big interest in food and is good at cooking. She’ll also makes us delicious cookie and muffins. So, she is someone who has a very active role within the group.”
Nicole on Jiyoung:
“Jiyoung is still the maknae of the group, but while she used to give off a child-like image before, she has been shedding that image and has becoming more mature and feminine. She is also very considerate towards the people around her. She’s like the vitamin of our group. She’s always lifting our moods and telling us stories in a fun way.”
Each member also discussed their current activities outside of KARA.
Gyuri dished about her first musical debut on ’200 Pound Beauty’, while Hara revealed her thoughts on her drama appearance on SBS’s ‘City Hunter’. Seungyeon also discussed her first role as a MC on SBS’s ‘Animal Farm’. Athletic Nicole talked about her love for pilates and explained the benefits of the popular exercise, and the maknae of the group, JiYoung, discussed her wish to go on a trip with her high school friends before graduating.
