TAIKO: Upcoming Malaysian Action Drama

Malaysian action dramas may not have much of an international reputation, simply because most times, they're lacking either in good action choreography or a good storyline. Apart from the upcoming "first Malaysian martial arts film," Kinta 1881, of which there's little information right now, there's also ahighly promising action drama called Taiko, to be directed by Brando Lee.
Lee, who studied filmmaking in Hollywood, has been making telemovies in the last few years before making his debut feature, Taufu (Tow Foo), last year. Shot on mini-DV, Taufu is a raw, intense, emotional drama about a guy (played by Stephen Chua, who also appears in Tan Chui Mui's award-winning Love Conquers All) who falls in love with a prostitute.
Taiko, Lee's second feature, will be his first to be shot on film. Lee wrote the original story while the script is written by film historian and educator Hassan Muthalib. Taiko, in Cantonese, literally means "big brother," and is a term normally used to address a high-ranking gangster. The story revolves around a love triangle between two guys and a girl, the three of them childhood friends. One of the guys is a cop while the other is a gangster on the wrong side of the law. Both cross each other's paths when the cop is assigned to a case involving the gangster.
Among those confirmed for the cast are Eman Manan, Chermaine Poo and Chew Kin Wah. Lee promises a balance of action and drama, including fight scenes, car chases and gunfights. Taiko is tentatively scheduledfor production in October and will be shooting in over 20 locations around the country.
