REVIEWS OF AVSL

Loved. Loved. Loved it.
Like any trademark CGM movie it is simple but holds A LOT OF HEART.IMHO, she surpasses Joyce Bernal when it comes to romantic comedies, because this film did not have any kissing scenes or elaborate make outsessions by the sunset but the kilig surge was gushing in. I know somepeople hate her usual family subplots, I think she just adds in DEPTHand CULTURE into her movies. Her movies never seem contrived even inthe cliche endings, we somehow see ourselves in Miggy and Loida.
John Lloyd Cruz is really the most versatile actor in the Philippines.Bar none. I loved his attack as Miggy, when they focused his face as helooked at the toy train... broke my heart.
This is also his most HANDSOME role if there's such thing. He looked soooo good in this.
Sarah Geronimo is a BRILLIANT SURPRISE. I have always thought she had alot of potential in acting and she proved herself here. Unlike otherlady comic roles, they falter much in drama... she proved she can doCOMEDY AND DRAMA, with an effortless sway and a really relateable way. Some more work on her "matono" line delivery but overall she stood onthe same ground as THE John Lloyd Cruz and still proved she's worthy tobe in a big film and be launched to full stardom.
ABS and Star Cinema are BLIND if they do not gamble on this tandemagain. I would scrap Betty La Fea or plans of an Angel Locsin soapaltogether and give Sarah-JLC their own show, just my opinion. Theyhave a very "K-drama" feel to them, a nice romantic comedy of a TV showdirected by CGM would be a good gamble.
Kudos also to the supporting cast from Gio, Matet, and Joross... and the scene stealer Rowell Santiago as the stern brother.
This film is not only funny but can really have you brimming into tears.
I did have some problems with the QUICK RESOLUTION... but heh it was forgiveable.
Sarah-JLC tandem... a movie like so... "may look different but it feels right".
This with One More Chance are CGM's best works. I guess she has a certain magic with John Lloyd, huh?
Now this time when STAR CINEMA says "the best movie this year..."
Believe the hype. And I don't say that quite often.
Among the recent films they released only this one stood above the ground of mediocrity.
PS.
[spoiler start] I would've liked a kiss in the end.[spoiler end]
Overall the movie is a B+... a fell good romantic comedy.
Nestor Torre is blind... he didn't get the movie. This isn't a richguy-poor girl story at all. That wasn't the main plot or the mainhindrance of the characters. It is about a man who seems to be the mostdespicable person in the planet and a girl who always saw good in himin spite of things. A man trying to PROVE HIMSELF worthy of love, whenall this time someone can love him without no further proof.
Nestor Torre? I thought you're smart--- here's a man who sings praisesto Richard Gutierrez's acting. Erm... yeah.JLC>>>>>>>>> Richard.

Two thumps (yes, thumps) down for Mr Torre. Two thumbs up for AVSL.
I thought so too (that Mr NT's smart enough to see the depth of it, thefilm). Now, personally, he's lost some pound of credibility on my bookas a much-respected reviewer in your (our) country at least. His reviewobviously was so much tainted by prejudice, RG vs JLC? Pheew! On a sidenote.. reminds me that even if the whole world sings praises forCharice Pempengco nowadays, he still puts down the kid's musical style, her "birit" ways, he says-- eh sa kung iyon ang nagpapa-WOW sa mga tao,esp professional hitmakers abroad. And that's what they're suddenlyafter. And I think personally, he's never really taken quite a likingw/ SG (ayaw talaga ng mabirit ata, lol) WELL, each to their own.. Youreally can't please everyone.
AVSL even reminds me of ENCHANTED, Disney's P300+Mblockbuster last year, Laida's character so much reminds me of Giselle(Amy Adam's character). Bouncy, naively likeable and so much alive. Andyou've got it right, the "mayaman ka-mahirap ako" is way out of thequestion. Not the central conflict. Not even a part of the conflict!!Because the film lends more about itself on values and relationships, emotions and feelings, slip-ups, forgiveness and redemption.
Even I was touched w/ the toy train scene and the cemetery outburst w/Daddy Montenegro. Very relateable (at least, for me). And then there'sLaida. The overzealous but loveable Laida. That's why the film reallyleft quite a mark, a deep impression carved on the viewers'consciousness kaya inuulit-ulit, "ang sarap ulit-ulitin". Too bad forme hindi na pwede kasi it's over an hour-drive from home.
A Very Special Love is a truly one-of-a-kind cinematic flick notjust overloaded w/ "kilig" but packed w/ lots of humor and heart. In mybook, a B+ too. A truly endearing and MEMORABLE film and some hardlyforgettable moviegoing experience.
A Very Special Love
Congrats!
