I do concur with the Leopard II as the best tank in the modern era. However, the Centurion in the top ten! Thats too British.

My Favorite tank of all time is the German Panther Tank, said to be the father of the modern main battle tank....the design was very influential for post-war tank design for both the western powers and Soviet tank designs....it was said one panther tank was equal to 5 sherman tanks and 3 T-34 tanks....in terms of kill ratios ....the Russians regarded a captured panther tank, as a prize asset and quickly used them against thier former masters....

From wikipedia....

The Panther  was a tank fielded by Germany in World War 2 that served from mid-1943 to the end of the European war in 1945. It was intended as a counter to the T-34 , and to replace the Panzer IV and III, though it served along with them and the heavier Tiger I and Tiger II tanks until the end of the war. The Panther's excellent combination of firepower, mobility and protection served as a benchmark for other nations' late war and immediate post-war tank designs and it is frequently regarded (along with the Soviet T-34-85) as the best tank design of World War II.

A German comparison of German tanks with the new Soviet T-34-85 and IS-2 heavy tank (with a 122mm gun), from March 23,1944, stated that "the Panther is far superior to the T-34/85 for frontal fire (Panther Ausf G could penetrate frontal armor of T-34/85 at 2,000 m, while T-34/85 could penetrate frontal armor of Panther Ausf G at 500 m), approximately equal for side and rear fire, superior to the IS-2 for frontal fire and inferior for side and rear fire." In 1943 and 1944, a Panther was able to destroy any Allied enemy tank in existence at ranges of 2,000 m, while in general veteran Panther crews reported a 90 percent hit rate at ranges up to 1,000 m. The Panther weighed about as much as the new Soviet IS-2 heavy tank, and indeed this vehicle is a closer match than the much lighter T-34.

In the west, the Allied response was inconsistent. The Panther was not employed against the western Allies until early 1944 at Anzio, and even there they were employed only in very small numbers. The US Army had encountered the Tiger in the North African campaign and correctly concluded that the tank would be seen only in small numbers. The Panther was thought to be another heavy tank that would not be built in large numbers.  In fact, almost half the German tanks in Normandy were Panthers, and the 75mm guns of the US Sherman tanks could not penetrate their frontal armor.

US forces eventually responded with large numbers of 76mm-armed Shermans, 90mm-armed tank destroyers, and eventually the Pershing heavy tank. Even with these better weapons, it was still difficult to penetrate the frontal armor of the Panther. According to US Army Ground Forces statistics, destruction of a single Panther was achieved after destruction of an average of five M4 Shermans

The Panther remained a major German tank until the end of the war.  Captured Panthers proved to be extremely popular vehicles among Soviet troops, who received them as rewards for extraordinary achievements in combat, and who sought to keep them in service as long as possible, contrary to regulations that captured Tigers and Panthers should not be repaired but abandoned and destroyed after mechanical failure. Even the humorous instruction manual for German Panther crews, called the Pantherfibel (Panther Primer), was translated into Russian and provided to crews of captured Panthers.

Panther Tank most famous action....Barkmans Corner..

....

Ernst Barkmann, operating with his platoon or even as a lone Panther tank, caused heavy casualties to the advancing Americans, destroying many tanks and armoured vehicles. On the morning of July 27, Barkmann found himself in his Panther cut off from the rest of his company. While attempting to reach his unit, he was stopped near the village of Le Lorey where he was told by German infantrymen that the Americans were closing in with a large armoured column. Barkmann positioned his Panther under a stand of oaks near the crossroads where the American tanks would have to pass.

As the column came into sight, Barkmann knocked out the two lead Shermans and a fuel tanker truck. Next he destroyed two Shermans which had attempted to bypass the burning tanker. The Americans called in fighter-bombers, which damaged Barkmann's Panther and wounded two of his crewmen. Barkmann's next victims were two Shermans that had used the noise of the fighter-bombers as cover to sneak up on the damaged Panther's flank. As Barkmann's crew repaired the Panther, two more Shermans were knocked out. Finally, before leaving, Barkmann destroyed one last Sherman.

During the engagement, which has come to be known as Barkmann's Corner, Barkmann knocked out nine Shermans and several other American vehicles and halted an American armoured attack. For his actions, he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
