Alhamdulillah, our speaker, br Husni Mohd Amin has recovered and is ready for his very intriguing talk tomorrow, inshaAllah (giving us time, meanwhile, to look up the meanings of 'gladiuses' and 'scimitars'? ;) ) ---
TALK DESCRIPTION “The major problems that beset the Muslim society today must be understood against the background of historical confrontation which Western culture and civilization had perpetrated against Islam.”
- Prof Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Islam and Secularism This talk discusses the early encounter between the two great civilisations, the series of conflicts known as the Crusades which precipitated as a result of the encounter, the cultural exchanges that happened, and life in those centuries. Knowledge in Islam is an invaluable means of man's individual and collective spiritual fulfilment and happiness. The awesome responsibility of its pursuit and the high ranks reserved for its posessors made it a driving force of Islamic civilisation wherever it spread. In this presentation we will discuss the definitions of knowledge in Islam, the channels through which knowledge is acquired, and oppositional attitudes towards knowledge that must be overcome in order to restore its proper place and function.
