Lagu Bangsa Johor dimainkan khas dalam istiadat rasmi bagi menyambut keberangkatan tiba Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku, dan bagi menanda dan menghormati keberangkatan
balik baginda. Pemangku Raja Johor berhak menerima Lagu Bangsa Johor dimainkan separuh lagu sahaja.

THE HISTORY OF USING CHEETAHS IN IMPERIAL HUNTS

Cheetahs are timid animals who like to live on their own, making them ideal, but still dangerous pets. The ancient Egyptians knew this, and imported them from the south to keep as personal companions, sometimes mummifying them after their deaths. They are also one of the fastest animals on earth, able to accelerate from 0 to 103 km/h in just three seconds and reach speeds of over 120 km/h, using their tails as counterbalance to change direction at will – making them ideal killing machines during a royal hunt.

We don’t know who was the first person to notice this potential and find a way to train them, but we know they were used as hunters by the Sāsānid king of kings Bharām Gūr during the fifth century CE. The next evidence of a cheetah hunting for humans comes one hundred years later from a painting in China dated to the Tang dynasty, followed by an Arab book on hunting from the tenth century, through which we discover that it was easier to train adult cheetahs because they had learned the basic skills from their mothers.
At about the same time we have a record of the King of England parading in the Norman city of Caen with a chained cheetah sitting on a horse behind him, which could mean it was a hunter because hunting cheetahs often rode horses, and one hundred years later we have a book telling us that King Arthur used to like giving them away as royal gifts. This book contains a chapter mentioning mythical battles between cheetahs and hares, which could mean the cats were used to hunt the hares, but we cannot be sure.
What is sure is that the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick the Second, a great hunter, imported hunting cheetahs from Tunisia in 1239. We know he used them for hunting because he wrote to one of his officers asking to send animals that were not perfectly trained but able to ride on a horse – using the Latin word describing the training of falcons. He owned a great number of them, each with its own handler, and in 1260 ordered 60 Persian carpets for the cat’s own use. Frederick also sent cheetahs to other rulers, for example to the English King Henry III, who ended up keeping a few at his court.
Hunting with cheetahs spread around the European courts, especially the Italian and French ones, but the fashion disappeared in the seventeenth century, probably because Asian cheetahs, which were the best trained hunters, were becoming difficult to get.

Meanwhile in India, the Moghul emperor Akbar kept 1,000 trained cheetahs in his retinue, fifty of which were deemed ‘special’ and lived at court. His favorite was a male called Samand Malik (like a ruby), who wore a jeweled collar and was accompanied by his own liveried servants. The emperor’s son Jahangir was also a hunting maniac, meticulously noting down every animal he killed. That’s why we know that he personally felled 28,532 animals plus 13,964 birds in 38 years.
True, royal hunts were an important part of Mughal life, both pleasure and political expedient, a way to bond with other aristocrats, show off one’s courage, observe other’s wits, pressure or award far way provinces, and at the same time, show the emperor as the ultimate ruler of both his subjects and the natural world.
That’s why they were grand affairs lasting over a month, always organized in open forests far away from the capital. Accompanying the emperor and his family were courtiers, the aristocracy, the harem, servants, soldiers, and the painters who would immortalize the most heroic scenes, all of whom shared the comforts of the royal encampment where huge kitchens served up to 40 meals a day in the shade of massive tents.
On the day of the hunt, hundreds of beaters drove the royal game into a huge enclosure constructed by the servants using portable netting, beyond which were the members of the court enjoying the show. Cheetahs arrived in cattle carts, cages, or crouching on horses just behind the rider, wearing a hood similar to the ones used in falconry. Unmasked, they would launch towards the animals scattering them about, followed by the emperor and other hunters who shot the prey from their mount using rifles and arrows, or butchered them on the ground with their swords. The risks were considerable, and, due to the watching audience, nobody could afford to look weak.
In a sense, the hunts were rites of passage, culturally linked to the Mughal’s Mongol and Timurid ancestry, where killing a lion was an essential ritual to formalize any kind of authority. That’s maybe why Nur Jahan, who was the wife of Jahangir and the real power behind the throne, not only attended the hunts but took part in them. A great shot, she was known for hunting tigers and big cats, and there are many stories of her bravery while on their pursuit.

Needless to add but I will anyway: these practices all but wiped out a large number of animals, including the Asiatic cheetah, that elegant creature that once graced the royal courts of the Indo-European world.
