Patutnya ditayangkan dulu tapi Light of Million Hopes yang disiarkan. Schedule RTM ni kekadang memeningkan kepala....

ON THE TRACK OR OFF (TVB) 2001

OTTOF is a rather enjoyable series made all the more enjoyable by generally good performances from all involved, a fairly logical script, good character development, at times unconventional plot points and a non-generic ending. If you are looking for a good drama with a strong script that is peppered with some good humour, a dash of romance and a fair amount of drama then I totally recommend renting this series.

Although the series is about horse racing, it isn't about gambling and it doesn't glamorise gambling either. Most of the principle characters do not gamble except for some who gamble small amounts just for fun. Those that are addicted to gambling do not prosper. The series takes great pains to point it out to us that the two main characters, Ah Yuen and Ah Yi do not gamble and this is in spite of the fact that Ah Yuen works for the turf club.

OTTOF is like its title suggests it is, it's less about gambling but more about the lives of those who depend on the turf club for their livelihood and their relationships with the people around them. Many scenes and plot points don't even involve the track in a direct fashion.

OTTOF is a series where it seems that the production team actually did some research and the balance between information and story is pretty good. You actually do learn about hierarchy in the stables, how jockeys become jockeys and a little bit about horses. You also learn a bit about social workers and how they deal with difficult situations. This lends weight to the series. It gives the series credibility so that it isn't just another drama about good vs evil. That said, even with all the information, one never feels that the pacing drags or it gets too preachy or there is an information overload because the script knows when to move on.

Another thing I liked about OTTOF is the family dynamics and logical characterisation. Why are Ah Tong, Ah Yi and Ah Yan the way they are? It's all fairly explainable if one looks at the family structure and their mother's character. Why is Ah Yuen the way he is? Again, a lot has to do with his family.

I also love it that the main characters develop and change whether it is for the better or worse. I like it that the characters are flawed, i.e. realistic and that many learn from their mistakes to become better, stronger people. And I like it that most of their actions can be explained, i.e. a lot of why they do what they do is because of their personalities, their character, their outlook etc. I like it too that when characters do something that is potentially difficult for the audience to understand, the script adds a line either said by the character himself or by another character which explains or gives you an idea as to why the character did what they did.

Also, the dialogue is fairly fun and rather nicely written. There are several puns and amusing analogies. There are also fun references to past series, other actors, Hong Kong pop culture, Martial Arts novels etc. A few examples (all from memory so it's not entirely perfect)

citer ni best jugak...seronok tengok Ah Yun/Ah Yuen yg childish & tergila2kan kuda...kelakar tengok dia gaduh dgn Ah Yee kes cat tertumpah tu...

Suka tengok hubungan Ah Yuen dengan makbapak dia, mesra. Walaupun maknya tak suka dia kerja jadi penjaga kuda tapi dia juga yang belikan Ah Yuen "kambing" (skuter) supaya senang nak pergi kerja. Ah Yuen pulak selalu ada 'komplot' dengan bapanya, kelakar anak-beranak ni....

aku tengok cerita ni ada beberapa pelakon dari country spirit seperti sifu si ah soon, kawan perempuan watak utama, ketua stable kuda dan beberapa lagi... aku notice sifu si ah soon ni tak der misai so boleh cam ler cara dia berjalan tu...

memang katt dah taulah citer dia macam mana ye? hmm, kite try avoid baca kat website tu semua sbb kalau boleh, tak nak lah spoil the mood...tapi tengok episod semalam, memang dah agak dah yg si Ah Thong tu dah lama suka kat Ah Yuen...tapi tak sangka jugak yg Ah Yuen pun sebenarnya dah tau Ah Thong suka dia even before Ah Thong bercinta dengan Ah Tung lagi...suka tengok Ah Yuen & Ah Yee...dua2 jenis yg manja & macam budak2...

Sedih pulak tengok hubungan antara Ah Thong dan Ah Tung sebab one-sided. Yelah, Ah Yuen pun bukan tak sedar yang Ah Thong sukakan dia tapi sebab Ah Tung memang dah suka sangat dengan Ah Thong tu. Err, nama nak dekat-dekat sama.....harap tak silap .

Kesian dengan Ah Tung sebenarnya, he's not getting the support he needed from Ah Thong. Nampak sangat 2 different sides of Ah Thong. More relaxed and happy bila dengan Ah Yuen tapi serious & stressed bila dengan bf sendiri.

Anyway, janganlah baca spoiler tu whitedove kalau boleh. Judging from yesterday's episode, rasanya mungkin dah boleh agak dah cerita ni sebenarnya, it's not as light-hearted as you think it is......oops :re:.

Best jugak cerita nie. Tapi susah juga sebab Ah Thong ngan Ah Yi dah sama2 sukakan si Ah Yuen. Pada pandangan saya, saya lebih suka pada Ah Yi dibandingkan Ah Thong sebab Ah Yi tu org nya lebih manja tak macam Ah Thong yg selalu garang je. Bagi diri Ah Thong, saya lebih tertarik dengan sifatnya yg tegas tapi bila dia asyik marah2 pun saya tak suka juga.

Apa pandangan kamu tentang Ah Yan ngan joki yg dia suka tu? Well bagi saya lakonan Ah Yan tak seberapa sebab nampak kaku plak.Tapi muncul pulak org yg bakal sukakan Ah Yan nampak! Siapa lagi kalau bkn si 'Sei Ko' (kalau tak silap lah).

Yg kelakarnya bila bos Ah Yi sukakan Ah Yi tu. Macam2 dia buat untuk dekat ngan Ah Yi tapi semua tak berjaya.Untuk seterusnya kita lihatlah cerita nie ok!

dengarnya citer ni panjang jugak, dalam 40 episod gitu...tulah ada terasa jugak yg citer ni takdelah se'light'hearted' episod2 awal ni...lagipun, most HK drama yg banyak episod agak melodrama jugak...

Hopefully pertengahannya takkan boring sebab kalau boring spoil semua cerita. N i need a happy ending but i think drama hong kong mesti happy ending punya.

rasa2nya pertengahan citer tak boring sbb dengar sikit2 hints dr katt, macam banyak konflik yg akan timbul nanti...tapi kite pun harapkan ending citer ni happy ending...

BTW, suka part Ah Yuen & Ah Yee Jumaat lepas...sanggup aje si Ah Yuen tu datang ofis Ah Yee malam2, siap bawak makanan lagi, padahal diorang bukannya ada declare apa pun lagi...

Haii....akhirnya Ah Thong dan Ah Tung bergaduh lagi, pasal cemburu pulak. Ah Thong ni memang boleh tahan panas barannya, cepat 'melenting'. Lepas tu ternampak pula Ah Yuen dan Ah Yee yang sangat mesra bersama. Bengang tak kira kakaknya ni, balik rumah pun emak sendiri jadi mangsa kena marah......

Ah Thong, in her concern for Ah Yee nampak seolah-olah nak 'mengelirukan' adiknya sendiri bila kata Ah Yuen jenis yang tak serius dalam percintaan. Macam cemburu dengan adiknya sendiri.....:re:

Comel & mesra betul mereka berdua ni especially masa di 7-11 tu. Memang pasangan yang sepadan. Ah Yuen baru sedar yang Ah Thong sukakan dia sejak dulu lagi, lagilah serba-salah dia bila Ah Tung pulak asyik mengadu. Hmm.....dua-dua pun kawan baik.
