Congrats: Bintulu flies into Malaysia Book of Records

BINTULU: The Sarawak Gudi Festival 2013 closed its curtains yesterday with a new entry in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the most number of kites flying simultaneously within 20 minutes.
There were 2,250 kites in the ‘let’s fly together’ event.
The old record of 1,655 kites was created in 2008 during the 4th Borneo International Kite Festival.
More than 3,000 people took the opportunity to be part of the new MBR record and it was a remarkable achievement by the locals here.
MBR officer Myra Dzaman was present to witness the record-breaking feat which was graced by Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) cum Kemena assemblyman Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom at 2.45pm.
The wind was not strong enough to fly some 3,000 kites at the Old Airport site simultaneously. Some people estimated that the number of kites could have doubled if there were a strong wind.
Naim Holdings Berhad, as part of its corporate social responsibilities, had donated 3,000 kites.
About 2,000 of the kites were distributed to students throughout Bintulu while the remainder were distributed among the general public.
To add sparkle to the occasion, the organising committee put up 100 lucky draw prizes and presented certificates with MBR logo to all the participants.
Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) deputy chairman Tan Sri Celestine Ujang Jilan, who spoke after MBR announced the successful record-breaking attempt, congratulated all kite flyers for creating history.
He also heaped praises on the organising committee for a job well done.
Bintulu Deputy Resident (Social) Richard Michael Abunawas, BDA assistant general manager Mohd Bohari Kipli, Bintulu police chief Supt Madang Usat, Pemanca Dr Francis Toh and Bintulu MP’s political secretary Zaiedy Nor Abunasir were among those present.
