Tafseer Ibnu Katsir 22:46
(46. Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.)
(Have they not traveled through the land,) means, have they not traveled in the physical sense and also used their minds to ponder That is sufficient, as Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya said in his book At-Tafakkur wal-I`tibar, "Some of the wise people said, `Give life to your heart with lessons, illuminate it with thought, kill it with asceticism, strengthen it with certain faith, remind it of its mortality, make it aware of the calamities of this world, warn it of the disasters that life may bring, show it how things may suddenly change with the passing of days, tell it the stories of the people of the past, and remind it what happened to those who came before.''' Walk through their ruins, see what they did and what became of them, meaning, look at the punishments and divine wrath that struck the nations of the past who belied,
﴿فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَآ أَوْ ءَاذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا﴾
(and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear) meaning, let them learn a lesson from that.
﴿فَإِنَّهَا لاَ تَعْمَى الاٌّبْصَـرُ وَلَـكِن تَعْمَى الْقُلُوبُ الَّتِى فِى الصُّدُورِ﴾
(Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.) means, the blind person is not the one whose eyes cannot see, but rather the one who has no insight. Even if the physical eyes are sound, they still cannot learn the lesson. |

Tafseer Sayyid Qutb 22:46
As the sūrah portrays these scenes, it adds another rhetorical question about their
effects on unbelievers:
Have they never journeyed through the lands, letting their hearts gain wisdom, and
their ears hear? It is not eyes that go blind; but blind indeed become the hearts that are
in people’s breasts. (Verse 46)
Emphasis is here placed on the location of hearts in people’s bodies, which serves
to amplify the blindness of those hearts in particular. Had those hearts been able to
reflect on the scenes portrayed, they would have remembered and people’s eyes
would have been tearful. They would have moved towards faith, at least as a result
of fearing an end like the ones that befell other communities. |

Tafseer Ibnu Katsir 2:88
(88. And they say, "Our hearts are Ghulf.'' ...)
(And they say, "Our hearts are Ghulf.'') is similar to His statement,
﴿وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا فِى أَكِنَّةٍ مِمَّا تَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ﴾
(And they say: "Our hearts are under coverings (screened) from that to which you invite us) (41:5).
Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn `Abbas said that,
﴿وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌ﴾
(And they say, "Our hearts are Ghulf.''), means, "Our hearts are screened.'' Mujahid also said that,
﴿وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌ﴾
(And they say, "Our hearts are Ghulf.''), means, "They are covered.''`Ikrimah said, "There is a stamp on them.'' Abu Al-`Aliyah said, "They do not comprehend.'' Mujahid and Qatadah said that Ibn `Abbas read the Ayah in a way that means, "Our hearts contain every type of knowledge and do not need the knowledge that you (O Muhammad) have.'' This is the opinion of `Ata' and Ibn `Abbas. |

Tafseer Sayyid Qutb 2:88
“They say, ‘Our hearts are sealed.’ ...” (Verse 88)
The words are fierce: it is as if thunderbolts or balls of fire are being thrown in
their faces. The verses completely demolish their arguments and their bogus excuses;
their malevolent attitude towards Islam and the Prophet Muĥammad is exposed
fully.
“They say, ‘Our hearts are sealed.’ ...” (Verse 88) They said that to Muĥammad and his followers to
discourage them from presenting the new religion to them, and in order to justify
their own refusal to accept Islam. |

Tafseer Ibnu Katsir 2:10
The Meaning of `Disease' in this Ayah
(10. In their hearts is a disease & Allah has increased their disease. ...
As-Suddi narrated from Abu Malik and (also) from Abu Salih, from Ibn `Abbas, and (also) Murrah Al-Hamdani from Ibn Mas`ud and other Companions that this Ayah,
﴿فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ﴾
(In their hearts is a disease) means, `doubt', and,
﴿فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا﴾
(And Allah has increased their disease) also means `doubt'. Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Abu Al-`Aliyah, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and Qatadah also said similarly. `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam commented on,
﴿فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ﴾
(In their hearts is a disease), "A disease in the religion, not a physical disease. They are the hypocrites and the disease is the doubt that they brought to Islam.
﴿فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا﴾
(And Allah has increased their disease) meaning, increased them in shameful behavior.'' He also recited,
﴿فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـناً وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَوَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَى رِجْسِهِمْ﴾
(As for those who believe, it has increased their faith, and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it will add disgrace to their disgrace.) (9:124-125) and commented, "Evil to their evil and deviation to their deviation.'' This statement by `Abdur-Rahman is true, and it constitutes a punishment that is compatible to the sin, just as the earlier scholars stated. Similarly, Allah said,
﴿وَالَّذِينَ اهْتَدَوْاْ زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَءَاتَـهُمْ تَقُوَاهُمْ ﴾
(While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance and grants them their piety) (47:17).

Tafseer Sayyid Qutb 2:10
"There is sickness in their hearts, and God has aggravated their sickness. ...(10)
“There is sickness in their hearts.” (Verse 10) There is something wrong with their
attitude and their hearts are not pure, which causes them to deviate and incur further
displeasure from God, who has “aggravated their sickness.” (Verse 10)
This type of sickness begins as a minor deviation and grows gradually, according
to the established laws of human social and psychological behaviour. Predictably,
such behaviour will only lead to one end, as befits those who deceive God and the
believers.

Tafseer Sayyid Qutb 83:14
No indeed! Their own deeds have cast a layer of rust over their hearts. (14)
They are strongly rebuked and reprobated for their rudeness and rejection of the
truth. These connotations, carried by the Arabic term kallā, translated here as ‘No
indeed’, are coupled with an assertion that their allegations are unfounded. We are
then given an insight into the motives of their insolent disbelief and the reasons for
their inability to see the obvious truth or respond to it: “Their own deeds have cast a
layer of rust over their hearts.” (Verse 14) Indeed the hearts of those who indulge in sin
become dull, as if they are veiled by a thick curtain which keeps them in total
darkness, unable to see the light. Thus they gradually lose their sensitivity and
become lifeless.
The Prophet says: “When a man commits a sin, it throws a black spot over his
heart. If he repents, his heart is polished; but if he persists in his practice, the stains
increase.” [Related by Ibn Jarīr, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasā’ī and Ibn Mājah.] Al-Tirmidhī
describes this ĥadīth as authentic. Al-Nasā’ī’s version differs in wording but not in
import. His version may be translated as follows: “When a man commits a sin, a
black spot is formed on his heart. If he desists, prays for forgiveness and repents, his
heart will be polished; but if he persists, the spot grows bigger until it has covered his
whole heart. This is what God refers to when He says: ‘No indeed! Their own deeds have
cast a layer of rust over their hearts.’’’ (Verse 14) Explaining this verse, Imām al-Ĥasan
al-Başrī said: “It is a case of one sin on top of another until the heart is blinded & dies.”

Tafseer Ibnu Katsir 47:29
(29. Or do those in whose hearts is a disease, think that Allah will not expose their ill--wills)
(Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their ill--wills) meaning, do the hypocrites think that Allah will not expose their affair to His believing servant Yes indeed, He will expose their affair and manifest it so that those with insight will be able to understand it. In that regard, Allah revealed Surah Bara'ah (or At-Tawbah), in which He clarified the hypocrites' scandals, and pinpointed their practices that are indicative of their hypocrisy. Because of that, this Surah (Surah Bara'ah) is also called "The Exposer''. Adghan is the plural of Dighn, which means what the souls harbor of envy and hatred toward Islam and its people who support it.
