SEORANG atlit India berlari sambil membawa baton Permaisuri berlatarbelakangkan Taj Mahal,  satu daripada tujuh keajaiban dunia di Agra, India, semalam.

Perkampungan atlit, jaminan keselamatan dipersoal CGF

Agensi

The shambolic buildup to the Delhi Commonwealth Games has brought a tirade of criticism from media in the host country and across the world.

Filthy and incomplete athlete accommodation, faulty construction work and ongoing terrorism fears have led to widespread speculation that the games could even be called off.

While journalists in Western countries have been quick to attack the organisation of the Games, it has been the Indian media and public which has dished out the harshest verdict.

The Times of India's website was today leading on an online poll in which 97% of more than 17,000 voters said games bosses have tarnished the country's image.

Asked if India should have bid for the Games in the first place, 59% said no.

The Calcutta Telegraph took a black humour approach to the fiasco: "When four tiles of a false ceiling fell at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today, a text-message joke zipped across the country: "A top Games organiser tried to hang himself but the ceiling at the Commonwealth Village tower collapsed!"

In the UK, the BBC said it would probably be the last event to be awarded to India.

David Bond, BBC sports editor, said: "Delhi 2010 was supposed to be a springboard for a 2020 Olympic bid. That can be almost certainly be consigned to the rubbish bin."

The pressure was building elsewhere too. In Canada, early results on a Globe and Mail poll found that 76% of Canadians though their team should not take part in the Games.

Across the Tasman, news.com.au said a "mass walkout threat puts Games on a knife-edge" and said there was a "real possibility one country's withdrawal will trigger a domino effect among larger nations".

The UK Guardian's correspondent in Delhi turned his fire on Indian sport as a whole: "The fiasco is a microcosm of all that ails Indian sport. The country's athletic failings can be summed up in one word: politicians."

Also in Britain, a commenter on The Sun's website said: "They have had more than enough time and money to have this completed and to a high standard. Cancel these games or move them, they aren't ready to host a games like this."
