Monday July 6, 2009Toyota hybrid is Japan's top selling car in June


TOKYO: Toyota's Prius hybrid - already Japan's highest-selling car - more than doubled its sales in June to claim the top spot for a second month, reflecting government tax breaks and growing popularity of products viewed as environmentally friendly.

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Monday that Toyota Motor Corp. sold 22,292 of the Prius cars in June, far more than the 10,915 it sold in May, when a revamped version of the car debuted to clinch the top spot in sales.

June was the third straight month that a gas-electric hybrid topped the Japanese sales charts.

The Prius was Japan's No. 2 seller over the first six months of the year, trailing only Honda's Fit compact.

Honda's Insight, a hybrid marketed as a cheaper alternative to the Prius, held the top spot in April but has since slipped, falling to fourth in the June rankings.

The Prius has gotten a boost from a government program that makes hybrids tax-free, providing an effective discount of about $1,500 for buyers.

Japanese consumers have also been increasingly drawn to new products seen as environmentally friendly, which also include solar panels and low-energy TVs. - AP

tue kerajaan dia yang bagi insentive pada kereta hybrids..... bukan pada toyota sahaja.... kalau kereta lain pakai hybrids.. kerajaan dia pun bagi gak...

PELUANG memandu uji model hibrid terbaru Toyota, Prius generasi ketiga yang bakal dilancarkan bulan depan satu pengalaman menyeronokkan.

Model terlaris hibrid di dunia itu mendapat perhatian sesiapa sahaja, malah ketika memandu uji, penulis turut menjadi tumpuan.


Toyota Prius cukup popular di Eropah dan pengeluar terpaksa menggandakan pengeluarannya.

Kenderaan ini dibekalkan enjin 1.8L dan mampu menyamai sebuah jentera berkuasa 2.4L.

Tenaga hibrid berfungsi ketika pemandu mula menghidupkan enjin dan penulis hanya mendengar bunyi 'beep' sebagai menandakan ia sudah dihidupkan.

Sistem itu membolehkan Prius bergerak di bawah kelajuan 45km/j hanya menggunakan tenaga bateri sepenuhnya.

Sebaik pedal minyak ditekan, tenaga elektrik dan petrol akan bergabung menghasilkan pecutan sangat responsif.

Penulis berpendapat kenderaan ini ibarat jentera berkuasa turbo, malah lebih unik kerana sistem enjin lebih kompleks, mesra alam dan menjimatkan minyak.

Kos kejuruteraan bagi menghasilkan paduan kuasa petrol dan elektrik menyebabkan jentera hibrid lebih mahal.

Sistem komputer Prius sangat pintar dan apabila ia mengesan lebih banyak tenaga diperlukan, motor elektrik digerakkan untuk membantu enjin petrol.

Secara teorinya, enjin 1.8L itu apabila dibantu dengan motor elektrik, ia mampu memecut seperti jentera berkuasa 2.4L.

Usah bimbang kuasa baterinya kerana apabila enjin dihidupkan, tenaga berlebihan dialirkan untuk mengecas bateri.

Bateri Ni-MH Prius memang tahan lasak dan boleh tahan sehingga 10 tahun.

Ruang dalaman Prius pula selesa untuk lima penumpang dewasa.

Pandu uji membuktikan Prius mampu mencecah kelajuan melebihi 180 km/j dengan mudah dan kuasa tork yang tinggi.

Toyota Prius dibekalkan dengan tiga mod pemanduan iaitu kuasa, ekonomi dan elektrik. Ia sesuai digunakan di bandar kerana menjimatkan minyak.

Bagi perjalanan 1,000 kilometer, setangki penuh petrol memadai.

Susun atur ruang kokpit yang futuristik termasuk ruang menyimpan barang dibawa konsol tengah menjadikan Prius begitu unik.

Kawalan penghawa dingin digital, sistem audio lapan pembesar suasa, teknologi Bluetooth pada stereng membolehkan pemanduan menjadi lebih santai dan tenang.

Ruang menyimpan barang di belakang juga luas dan dibekalkan dengan penutup kanvas.

Sistem HUD (Head Up Display) membolehkan pemandu mengetahui kelajuan kenderaan dengan melihat cermin hadapan tanpa menoleh panel meter di tengah papan pemuka.

Penumpang belakang juga dibekalkan dengan corong penghawa dingin selain rekaan fabrik bermutu tinggi.

Model ini dibekalkan sistem Smart Entry yang membolehkan pemandu membuka pintu tanpa anak kunci, memadai menyentuh mana-mana pemegang pintu.

Cuma, pastikan 'remote sensor' di kocek dan anda hanya perlu menekan butang 'start' untuk menghidupkan enjin.

Toyota masih belum menetapkan harga untuk model ini tetapi jika anda berminat, ia adalah pelaburan berbaloi walaupun dengan harga yang tinggi.

Toyota's hugely popular Prius hybrid ranked as Japan's top-selling car in July, clinching the spot for the third consecutive month as tax breaks boosted sales of green vehicles, an auto industry group said on Thurs.

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Toyota, the world's No. 1 automaker, sold 27,712 Prius cars in July, up 24% from June.



And the number one selling vehicle in Japan is ....


Sales of gas-electric hybrid cars have been surging in Japan despite the global auto slump, helped by government incentives such as making hybrid vehicles tax free.

Honda also enjoyed brisk sales of the Insight hybrid, selling 10,210 Insight cars in July, up 16.3% from June.

The Insight, a hybrid marketed as a cheaper alternative to the Prius, held the No. 4 slot in July auto sales. Honda's popular Fit compact secured the No. 2 spot in the same month.

Toyota's Vitz subcompact, which is marketed overseas as the Yaris, came third, the association said.

Honda, meanwhile, has brushed off claims in Japanese and overseas media that the Insight is a copycat of the Prius.



Down to number four, but still a hit.


"We don't think it looks like the Prius at all," said Nobuki Ebisawa, managing director at Honda R&D Co., Honda Motor Co.'s research unit. "There may be some similarities in the roof line, but it is clearly different."

Ebisawa acknowledged considerations for maximising aerodynamics and placing the hybrid system of electric motor and gas engine may make for similar styling in hybrids cars.

A Honda design executive denied on Thurs the often made allegation that his company's Insight was a copycat of Toyota's Prius, the world's best-selling hybrid car.

"We don't think it looks like the Prius at all," said Nobuki Ebisawa, managing director at Honda R&D Co, Honda's research unit. "There may be some similarities in the roof line, but it is clearly different."



When you have Insight, people are bound to say something.


Ebisawa's remarks were in response to the observation frequently made in the Japanese and overseas media that Honda's new Insight gas-electric hybrid bears a resemblance to rival Toyota's remodeled Prius.

Both went on sale at about the same time earlier this year. They are both selling well, especially the Prius in Japan, where it has been the top-selling model for three straight months - the first time a hybrid has taken that spot.

Healthy hybrid sales have been a bright spot in the dismal auto industry, slammed by the global financial crisis. Government cash-for-clunkers incentives have helped lift their sales in Japan and abroad.

But he said the design approach at Japan's No. 2 automaker has roots in the origins of his company in 1960, which he called "design DNA."

Honda has always tried to balance the desire for a dynamic look with a vehicle's uses, said Ebisawa, arguing there was continuity in Honda designs, including the Insight.

The same way of thinking and framework for design can be seen in Honda's Clarity fuel-cell vehicle, now available in limited numbers through leasing, as well as more common gas-engine models like the Civic and Odyssey, Ebisawa said, showing a clay model of the Insight to drive home his points.

Any similarities between the Prius and Insight are coincidence, he said at the Honda design facility in Wako, a suburb in Tokyo.

Toyota's hybrid system is more complex than Honda's so it needs a higher roof, and that makes for a distinguishing feature that should be easy to spot out, he told reporters.

Ebisawa also said not all design proposals have to be expensive, and some simple ideas can offer fun for drivers to help make products more attractive.

He gave as an example the image of a leaf-shaped bud that pops up on the dashboard of the Insight, which grows bigger if one drives the hybrid to maximise mileage.

"Our idea is that the person comes first," Ebisawa said. "Design and concept are there to connect the human being with technology and styling." - AP
