Qualifying Day 4 round-up
Thursday, 18 June 2009
The phrase "dream come true" was used by many of the players who won their final qualifying match today to earn a place in the main draw of Wimbledon.
There were many different dreams but with one thing in common: the dream took place on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club during The Championships.
Taylor Dent's dream was to return to Wimbledon after a four-year battle with back problems. The former top 30 player had fallen so far that he required a wild card into qualifying at the start of the week.
"After my back injuries I am not back yet but I am on the right path, I take one step at a time," Dent said after his 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-3 victory over Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. "I have had two operations and dozens of little ones but when my doctor told me he was not guaranteeing anything if I gave it a try I felt I had a second chance.
"Now I am going to give the body a rest but maybe do some work on my serve and forehand over the weekend. I'm three wins better off on grass than many of the players and that may help me."
Michael Yani's dream was simply to play in the tournament he had watched on TV as a child. "There is nothing to describe how I feel," said Yani after his 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Prakash Amritraj. "The closest I got to Wimbledon was when I drove past there the other day.
"I had tried to qualify for the US Open and Australlia but to go for Wimbledon on grass was something different. I watched it on TV when I was a kid but now I would love to win a match there, it's a dream come true."
There were 16 men and 12 women who won their place in the Wimbledon draw from a field of 128. While in the doubles, four men's and ladies' teams qualified.
Anastasija Sevastova realised her dream of an appearance in the main draw at her second attempt, having lost in the first round of qualifying last year.
"It's my dream to play at Wimbledon. It was my goal to qualify here and I did that now it抯 my plan to win the first round," she said after beating Darya Kustova 6-0, 6-1. "The first match at qualifying was really tough but I came through, the second round was easier and today I played some of my best tennis this year."
Ladies top seed Viktoriya Kutuzova was the first player to reach the main draw on the final day of qualifying after a quick fire 6-0, 6-2 win over Shenay Perry of the USA.
Kutuzova will be hoping to make amends after her dream of a Centre Court showdown with Kim Klijsters in 2006 turned into a nightmare.
"Something happened," she said. "I ate too many strawberries and all these spots came up on my arms and my back. I could not play on the Centre Court because of that and was defaulted. So no more strawberries for me."
The 2002 men's semi-finalist Xavier Malisse has had to contend with various injuries over recent years but showed no sign ill-health in his 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-0 win over Spain抯 Daniel Munoz-De La Nava. "I've been up and down," he said. "I was sick for a bit and off for 3-4 weeks and really off the planet but now I am playing well.
"I've worked hard to get here but it feels good to get back into Wimbledon. It抯 tough in the qualies |

Mcm ms Roland Garros, x best langsung masa final hari tu. |

sekiranya Federer menang Wimby maka dia akan naik balik No 1. Nadal plak no dua. Muray juga berpeluang naik no 2 sekiranya dia menang Final dan Federer kalah awal pusingan....jeng jengjeng |
