Kelabit invents fastest light emitting transistor

KUCHING:A Kelabit scientist has made Malaysia proud after he and University ofIllinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC) beat 40 years of scientific norm byinventing the world’s fastest light emitting transistor and lightemitting diode.
TOP BRAIN: Gabriel (centre) with Feng (left) and Prof Holonyak.
Dr Gabriel Walter, founder and CEO of Quantum Electro Opto Systems(QEOS) Sdn Bhd, scored both a national and personal breakthrough on theinternational technology front by being part of the team that createdthe world’s fastest spontaneous light emitters capable of transmittingat speeds of up to 7 GHz.
The feat was achieved recently through the Brain Gain Malaysia (BGM)Programme initiative, which encourages Malaysian scientists andresearchers residing abroad and working on high impact commercial-readytechnology, to return and help accelerate Malaysia into aninnovation-led economy.
Gabriel from Sarawak scored his second success when the research wasselected for publication on June 15 2009 edition of the Applied PhysicsLetters (by the American Institute of Physics), the most widelycirculated technical journals in the world.
In addition to legendary inventor Prof Nick Holonyak Jr, Prof MiltonFeng and Gabriel, the papers are also co-authored by UIUC PhD graduatestudents Chao Hsin Wu and Han Wui Then (another Malaysian).
“QEOS gigabit speed LED is unique as it is a device that iscost-efficient to make and effortless to be implemented as the lightbulb itself. It will introduce a pricing pressure and impact not seenbefore in the data communication and consumer electronic market. Andfor some fibre optic implementations, these LEDs consume 90 per centless power compared to existing optical solutions,” said Gabrielthrough a press statement made available yesterday.
“For more than 40 years, the scientific community had embraced thebelief that efficient spontaneous light device cannot be operated atbandwidths larger than 1 GHz. After more than five years of fundamentalresearch which began at UIUC in 2004, the QEOS-UIUC team proved that4.3 GHz operation of a light emitting transistor (LET) and, later, the7 GHz operation of the LED were possible.
The research was funded through a four-year USD$6.5 million DARPAgrant and later supported by the BGM grant and the US Research ArmyOffice. The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is anagency of the United States Department of Defence for the developmentof new technology for use by the United States military,” he explained.
“In an age where energy conservation and the issues of globalwarming are important, this represents a significant environmentaltechnology breakthrough. Our high speed LEDs will enable a new class ofcost competitive “green” products that are environment friendly andaesthetically pleasing. Those thick ugly cables that usually come withyour High Definition TVs and monitors would be things of the past,” hesaid.
Gabriel was born in Kuching in 1977. He received the Bachelor ofScience, Master of Science and PhD degrees in electrical engineeringfrom the UIUC in 1998, 2001 and 2003, respectively.
His doctoral advisor, Prof Nick Holonyak Jr, was the inventor of thefirst practical LED and is one of only 13 Americans to have won boththe National Medal of Science (1990) and the National Medal ofTechnology (2002). Gabriel was Prof Holonyak’s last PhD student.
Gabriel is also a Senior Research Scientist at the UIUC. Hisresearch interest includes III-V quantum-well and quantum-dot-coupledto quantum-well lasers and transistor lasers and long-term radioisotopepower sources.
He co-developed the first quantum-dot-coupled-to-quantum-well lasersto demonstrate the first room temperature operation of single quantumdot layer laser at both the visible (600 to 670 nm) and infraredwavelengths (960 to 1100 nm). In 2004, he co-invented the transistorlaser.
In 2008, he along with Prof Holonyak Jr and Prof M Feng, foundedQuantum Electro Opto Systems Sdn Bhd to explore and commercialise thenew opportunities in high-speed opto-electronics and integratedcircuits enabled by the transistor laser and light emitting transistortechnology.
Gabriel disclosed that a research and development facility inMalacca will be developed and improved over the next five years tocater for work on advanced product and application development, devicecharacterisation and analysis, device layout and design, semi-conductorepilayer design, device and product package development and productcharacterisation and analysis.
“Malacca will be QEOS headquarter for R&D. We are currentlylining up the necessary investments from both local and foreign sourcesto make this happen,” he said.
Meanwhile researchers based in Illinois will continue to developadvanced concepts and theoretical models, microwave model, advancedsemi-conductor processes and fabrication of devices.

For example, Infra-red cameras. These cameras use LEDs technology. Manufacturers will benefit from this new discovery.

i know infra red camera are using LED technology. even ordinary LED will do the work. i wanted to know what makes it so special when we already have LED that capable of doing the same work than this super fast light emmitting LED. i know, it must be better than this!

The speed advancement? Think that's the most critical part of this new discovery. The article did say present speed is 1 Ghz.

Anyway, to me, in layman terms, present infra-red cctv cameras do not produce quality recordings. Still blurry. So with this improvement, infra-red cameras can produce videos that are as good as daytime recordings.

As also mentioned in the article, this research was funded by an agency from the US Defence Ministry. So military night vision equipments can be improved further? Now, we see in the movies, they are red in colour....maybe later surveillance cameras can produce real time pictures.

or even in our present cameras....we will no longer need flashlight to take quality pictures in total darkness.

Jangan sesekali downgrade orang ulu ya
diam2 ubi berisi
sekali mencipta nama sampai peringkat dunia
orang melayu pulak apa cerita?
dah senang sket suka betul nak menunjuk-nunjuk

Sik malu kah??? perasan jak superior tapi sebenarnya sik ada apa2
patutlah sidak yahudi ya bangga dgn bangsa sidaknya dan selalu jak rasa superior
sebab sidaknya memang betul2 genius nampak jak kejayaan sidak
tapi orang melayu tok ...berlagak jak superior tapi habuk pun tarak
