CLP to be scrapped, says Zaid
By ROYCE CHEAH KUALALUMPUR:
The Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) will soon be scrappedin favour of the Common Bar Course (CBC) and Common Bar Exam (CBE), LawMinister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said. Citing that a study by acommittee appointed by the Legal Qualifying Board (LQB) on how toimplement the move was in its final stages, Zaid said the goal was tostandardise and improve the quality of law practitioners. "The CBC and CBE will be mandatory for anyone who wants to practise law, whether they are local or foreign graduates."
Zaidhowever would not speculate on whether the CBC and CBE would be theonly prerequisite before a graduate is called to the Bar or whetherchambering would continue. "The course and exam will be overseen by a non-profit organisation supported by the Government." Zaid, who was speaking to reporters Wednesday at the Parliament lobby, wasexpanding on a written reply to Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh'squestion on whether the Government had plans to abolish the CLP andwhat it would be replaced with.
He added that views from theAttorney-General's chambers, Bar Council, Malaysia Qualification Agencyand universities were also being sought by the committee. "TheLQB has also advised the committee to look into the possibility oflocal universities already offering law degrees to also offer the CBCconsidering they have the infrastructure. "I know this issue hasbeen going on for a long time and that questions had been raised bystudents and parents. As such, we are moving forward to implement whathas been discussed." When asked if the move was due tocomplaints by CLP students over the low pass rate, Zaid said he did notwant to discuss that but was more concerned about executing what wasplanned. He added the report on the study would be ready in anumber of months and that it was part of his responsibility as lawminister to improve the current situation.

Well as local law grads i still curious to know how gov would implement with it...Maybe it's good but i feel that it should be more specific as we're local grads who are sitting for law degree within 4 years instead foreign 3 years LLB. Are they would be having same course or mere repeating what we'd learn during our final year course for local? How about forumers opinion......p/s-Ahkak Fairy lama tak dgr pendapat la..Ruroni lagi...all my senior during Hons in UiTm huhuhu |

this will apply to all local n foreign grad the minister said. specifically, im not sure if local grads means both IPTA n IPTS. syllabus pun lain antara ipta n ipts.
if it's easier to pass (compared dgn cLP) the final hurdle b4 chambering vide this CBE and CBC - I disagree! we dun want to have abundance of ppl in malaysia yg senang2 je become qualified persons (as interpreted in section 3 of the LPA) tp takder Q.
im not sure how they're going to implement it tho so i cant comment much. i'd like to know wat will happen to the existing final year (professional year/llb hons) methods that are being used by some of the local IPTA. if ipta's syllabus are better n lebih ada niche, then syg if the syllabus are scrapped off to give way to the CBE and CBC. |

Tula fairy..i don't know how much they would implement it, sebenarnya kat uitm dah ada cerita menda ni tapi dengarnya dekan-dekan law school IPTA semua tak setuju sebab nak protect interest local grads. Even lect chip pun ada ckp kalo boleh uitm kene pertahankan hons dorang gak....
emm saya ni nampaknya kene wat CBE atau CBC la nnt jawabnya, tapi tak kesah pun, kalo lebih baik saya terima je...cuma janganla buang program hons kita tu, sayanglaaa...
wait and see in 2 months, apa mechanismnya.. |
