Ice baths help Real Madrid抯 Raul improve play
The Real Madrid striker is bathing in ice and sleeping in high-altitude conditions, and he抯 off to his best start in nearly a decade with eight goals in 14 Spanish league matches.
"I抳e done it because of the love I have for this team and this club, and I have never thought about how it could hurt me," Raul said Tuesday about his ice baths, which can last up to 10 minutes.
Spanish media recently reported that the 30-year-old striker had converted his bedroom into a hypoxic chamber which simulates high-altitude conditions.
The practice, which is used by some NBA and NFL teams, increases the number of oxygen-rich red blood cells in the body to improve endurance, reduce fatigue and speed up recovery.
Marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe and rugby player Jonny Wilkinson also enjoy ice baths, which can aid recovery and improve respiration.

Dudek wants to leave Real to claim Poland place
MADRID, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek wants to leave Real Madrid in the January transfer window in search of regular first team action for the rest of the season so he can win a place in the Polish national team for Euro 2008.
'I've got a three-year contract with Real Madrid but I want to look at the possibility of leaving,' the 34-year-old told Spanish sports daily Marca on Wednesday.
'Poland have qualified for the European championship for the first time and I have received an important call from the coach Leo Beenhakker who told me that if I played regularly I would be his keeper at Euro 2008.
'I want to play at the European championship because it will be a historic moment for our country and I haven't played at all in Madrid. I think the best thing now is that we sit down and talk.'
Dudek joined Real as a free agent from Liverpool in the close season to provide cover for first-choice keeper Iker Casillas but he has yet to play for the club in either the Primera Liga or the Champions League.
'I would like to leave,' Dudek added.
'If I were 26 I would never leave Real Madrid even if I was second choice, but things have changed with the call from Poland. I'm 34 and they have given me hope of playing in an important tournament.
'I know I will only have a chance if I play regularly in the next few months. Real have the final word... but I want to be totally honest with them about this.'
Poland have been drawn alongside Germany, Croatia and joint hosts Austria in Group B of Euro 2008.

Heinze in new swipe at Man Utd, Ferguson
Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze has taken another swipe at Manchester United and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Asked to compare the two clubs, Heinze told Onda Madrid: "Real is different from Manchester. At Madrid, people get along better, there's more openness. "Manchester is a closed club and everything is about competition, which is the philosophy of the coach." On playing in the Premiership, the Argentina international added: "They (England) play forcefully, but are very fair. Between the players there's much respect, the referees speak a lot with the players and that also helps. "Here (Spain) you try to talk and they (referees) remain silent, or you get a card." |
