| | 25 years ago, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new model which was smaller than all other models offered by the German carmaker at that time. Up till then, the smallest Mercedes-Benz series was the E-Class and as this new model was to be smaller, it came to be referred to as the 態aby Benz |

| Two different front ends are now available - Elegance on the left and Avantgarde on the right
|

The design of the new C-Class reflects the technical superiority of automobiles bearing the 3-pointed star. The taut lines and large, tranquil surfaces complement the pronounced wedge-shape of the front end which serves to emphasise attributes such as agility and performance. For the first time in a Mercedes sedan, the radiator grille is used as a distinguishing feature to position the line variants more clearly. Three extended, horizontal louvres and a big centrally-positioned Mercedes star characterise the Avantgarde version which has been a traditional design feature of the sporty Mercedes-Benz models. In fact, this type of radiator grille has been around for more than 50 years, having originally been used on models for the racetrack. It first appeared on the 300 SL "Gullwing", a legendary production sportscar model in 1954.
With the Elegance version, on the other hand, the appearance is more themed towards comfort and luxury and the designers have chosen a 3-dimensional, louvred radiator grille with a high-gloss finish.
The overall length of 4581 mm makes the new sedan 55 mm longer than the third generation. The body width has increased by 42 mm to 1770 mm and the wheelbase by 45 mm to 2760 mm. Naturally, the increases have been exploited to give a more spacious cabin environment.
| Rear end has optimised aerodynamics and even the tail lights have been designed for efficient airflow
|

Two newly-patented Mercedes-Benz innovations that bring significant aerodynamic advantages are being used in the new C-Class for the very first time, i.e. innovative "ventilated tail lights" to replace conventional spoiler lips and twin rubber drainage channel to keep the rear window clean even in heavy rain.
The innovative tail light design ensures that when the car is on the move, air is sucked in from the underbody and is conducted behind the tail lights to flow out of the small ventilating slits in the lenses. As the tail lights are hermetically-sealed against the vehicle body, the air is only able to escape to the side via the ventilating slits. In this way, the aerodynamic specialists have been able to influence the airflow along the side walls by abruptly redirecting it at the tail lights, thus measurably reduce the air resistance and therefore, fuel consumption.
This is not the first time that Mercedes-Benz has come up with an innovative design for the tail lights as some three decades ago, the company also introduced 慻rooved |
