I nak bukak topic ni..Toastmaster ni macam kelab utk improve our presentation skills. I pun ada join mende2 cam ni...so, sape2 ada tips, any article regarding to this topic or experience, let's share together..

No More VAMPIRE WORDS

Just as vampires suck life from their victim, so word-vampires suck life from our presentations. Word-vampires are those unnecessary space-fillers such as "ah" and "umm" that we use to fill awkward silences between sentences or thoughts.

The way to stop a vampire is to drive a wooden stake through its heart. We can drive a stake through the hearts of word-vampires by counting them. Fillers words need the counting stake driven through them as quickly as possible.

Toastmaster is a performance-enhancing experience where all the tools to help us become better speakers should be used. Counting ahs is just one of those tools.

Professional speakers allow no vampire words.

topic on 'vampire words'?
ok, saya cadangkan pendapat saya dibawah ni untuk diketengahkan..

is there a need to be so strict?
when people speak, especially when it is an unprepared subject matter that another has pulled out of the air, there are times of akward silences when a person has to pause..  either to think or to form the appropriate words/sentences.  or are we now supposed to not think first and shoot from the hip instead?

professional speakers do not make excellent speakers.  nobody listens to 'professionalism'.  they only lend an ear and hears what the speaker says, but they wont listen.
people want to listen to the subject matter at hand.  everyone is intelligent nowadays.  they know whether a person is speaking from knowledge or simply bluffing, no matter how articulate the speaker is.

or does this refers to when a person is speaking from a prepared text?  if so, there is no reason to have umms and ahhs.  but then, that would not be 'speaking', is it?

toastmaster session last about a few hours...at least one hour and it gives u an opportunity to make in impromptu speech, on any topic.

there's this "ahh" and "umm" counters...i think u tend to have these speech fillers when u are unsure of the topic u talk about, usually shows that u lack preparations.

in KL, there's a lot of these Toastmasters training centers...i have yet to try them but being told by my mum who used to frequent them about 10 yrs ago...

if 'preparations' are needed, what's 'impromptu' about it anymore...

if toastmasters (there are others in the forum here, that i know of) plan to kill off this tendency during their sessions, it is ok.  but if it is just to condescendingly put off others (non-toastmasters) outside, then that's just pathetic.

but there is definitely a difference of 1-mins-preparation speech than the speech u had typed out and prepare for a certain set of audience.
impromptu here i guess give the idea of time limit in preparing the speech..

Basically during the meeting we'll have 2 session which divide to prepared speech by fellow toastmaster which take abt 5-7 minutes to present to audience depends on the assignment.

The other session is called table topics, which anyone in d meeting can participate to 2 minutes short impromptu speech base on random topic choose by Table Topics Master.

Both session eventhough look simple but we have 4 officers to monitor our speeches eg.

Ah Counter -  responsible to check any Vampire words using in the meeting.

Grammarian -  to check on proper usage of phrases and quality of english being practise

Timer -  to timed ur speeches so you won't exceed the time limit

Evaluator - a person who will evaluate ur speech and give comment later on ur weakness n how to perfect it and will highlight on ur strength too.

All these officers will give their reports at the end of the session for fellow Toastmasters.
