'Unusual' fish harvest from Beluran river
Beluran: Local residents of Kampung Rampek at Jalan Kuala Sapi here harvested "hundreds" of fish gasping for air at Sungai Muanad since early Wednesday.
The phenomenon followed heavy rain a few days earlier, and the villagers claimed they could each catch a few bags of fish waiting on the surface.
While many described the phenomenon as highly unusual, some believed that toxic effluent being dumped into the river had polluted the waters. The toxic waste could have originated from the palm oil mills located near the river.
Cousins Ricky Majunis, 36, and Willy Lanjungin, 25, claimed that the river seemed to be covered with oil slicks.
Beluran Fisheries Officer, Mohd Din Gapang, said the phenomenon normally occurred every year, following heavy rain.
However, the department here had yet to receive a report on the incident, he added.
He did not rule out that toxic effluent from the mills located near Sungai Muanad could have been the contributing factor, saying the department had been analysing water samples from the river over the years, and found it to be heavily polluted. |

oil palm is alright provided they meet up with environmental standards , why not the state TAX the industry as means to encourage the industry to take up environmental safety measures. |

good conditions declining
when the conditions for oil palm growing healthy are not available,
the total loss would be tremendous.
max and min temperature are already not prevailing. |
