KUCHING: A 12-year-old boy who was supposed to take his UPSR examination today was snatched and dragged away by a crocodile at Sungai Sarawak at Kampung Bako Ulu, about 25km from here, yesterday.

Mohd Azwan Hatta, from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bako, was swimming with his friend Sulaiman Sakini, 15, at 3.30pm in the river, about 200 metres from his house.

Sulaiman said Mohd Azwan was holding his shoulders from behind when they were swimming and none of them noticed the presence of the crocodile.

Glitch puts 800 pupils in quarantine

By CHRISTINA TAN

MALACCA: More than 800 pupils in 14 schools were quarantined when the door to a room holding their UPSR examination papers could not be opened.

They were supposed to start the Bahasa Melayu (BM) 1 Pemahaman paper at 8.15am but the jammed door forced the time to be rescheduled to 11am.

The Bahasa Melayu 2 Karangan and Mathematic 1 papers were rescheduled to 12.20pm and 2pm, respectively.

The three papers together with those for today and tomorrow had been kept in the room located at SMK Seri Mahkota in Umbai.

Firemen took about 90 minutes to break open the 25cm thick steel door of the room measuring 20m by 25m.

?ll students were quarantined while waiting for the papers to be distributed to the schools,? said state Education department director Azizah Abd Gani.

She said 12 national schools and two Chinese schools in the Umbai area were affected.

Azizah said the door could not be opened when the examiners arrived at the school to distribute the papers at 6.30am.

She said they informed the safety division of the Education Department and Malaysian Examination Board in Kuala Lumpur at 7am.

?fficers from the board and safety division arrived later and instructed them to force open the door.?

Azizah said this was the first time such an incident had occurred in the state and the authorities at the affected schools were asked to prepare food and drinks for the students while they were quarantined.

She said exam times for today and tomorrow would not be affected.

Today's papers are Mathematics II (for National and Chinese schools) and Chinese Language I and Chinese Paper II (Chinese schools only).

The papers for tomorrow are English and Science (for National schools) and Science, English I and II (Chinese schools).

Policemen escorted the Education Department officers in relocating these papers to an undisclosed location.

Merlimau Fire and Rescue department chief Sehat Atan said the department received a call from SMK Seri Mahkota at 8.15am.

State Education and Higher Learning Committee chairman Datuk Yaakub Md Amin said there was no element of sabotage in the incident.

State police chief SAC (1) Ayub Yaakub said there was no foul play.

My thoughts

they are in line with what is in the Bible.

God decides who go to hell or heaven, but I can offer advice.

who is this powerful God not Allah.

Allah of the Koran only leads people  to hell.

so 13friday ,

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died from a stingray wound while filming off north Queensland.

Friends believe he may have died instantly when struck by a stingray as he  filmed a sequence for his eight-year-old daughter Bindi's new TV series.

Irwin's friend of 20 years, Ferre De Deyne said Irwin had been struck by the stingray while filming. "The stingray just happened to be swimming around and out of the blue whacked his tail at him," he said.

"It is absolutely tragic. I have dived so many times with stingrays and they are usually very placid things," he said.

Known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter,  44-year-old Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!"

Mona Fandey lives on ?
-by Meor Shariman -
ONLY a month after the producer of Dukun, Astro Shaw Sdn Bhd, denied that the film was based on the life of Malaysia? most infamous shaman ? Maznah Ismail, known as Mona Fandey, its website and teaser poster stated otherwise!

It emerged last week that a teaser poster of the film, starring Umie Aida, was released and had the words, ?ased on a true story?.

If this was a fluke, it was proven otherwise when the movie? official website ? www.dukunthemovie ? was unveiled to the public on Monday.

Again, it stated that the movie was ?ased on a true story.?

Dukun tells a story of Diana Dahlan, a bomoh who dabbles in the occult and ends up being tried and sentenced to death.

Told from the point of view of her lawyer, Karim, the horrors associated with Diana? story involved murder, witchcraft, greed and mayhem.

When the media got hint of the project, its executive producer, Dominique Hee, had brought reporters to the set and hinted that it was based on the country? most sensational and unusual trial.

But when the media reported that it was based on Mona Fandey? life, the late Mona Fandey? relatives expressed their disappointment and outrage.

The producers immediately denied that Dukun is based on Mona Fandey? story, and instead claimed that it is based on the life of several dukuns.

Interestingly, when The Malay Mail interviewed its director, Dain Iskandar Said, he revealed that he was approached by Hee to ?irect a film based on a true story that happened in Malaysia years back.? (See Buzz report on page 22)

On Tuesday, The Malay Mail was issued a photo taken from one of the scenes, in which Diana, played by Umie Aida, flanked by two female police officers, is led into a courtroom, garbed in red, with a smirk on her face.

That shot bears a striking resemblance to a photograph of Mona Fandey, who was also dressed in red and flanked by two female police officers, as she was led into court for her trial in 1994.

? don? want to comment. I have no comment!? said Hee, when The Malay Mail contacted her last night.

She denied that Dukun is based on the Mona Fandey case, but declined comment when asked on whose true story the film is based on, as stated in the movie? official poster and website.

It is learnt that even some of the scenes in the movie are similar to the actual events!

In one scene, the victim, businessman Datuk Jefri, is seen lying on an altar with his eyes closed, while Diana, using an axe, decapitates him. His body is then chopped into several pieces!

In real life, the court heard of how Pahang State Assemblyman Datuk Mazlan Idris was laid on an altar, with his eyes closed while waiting for money to fall from the sky, upon which Mona decapitated him with an axe.

His body was cut into 18 pieces and skinned. The body parts were buried in a hole in Mona? house in Pahang.

In the movie, Diana has an apprentice ? Fadzil ? played by Sofi Jikan, while in the Mona Fandey case, she had a helper, Juraimi Hussin.

The movie is in post-production and will be released on Dec 14.

There are also plans to market the RM2.8 million movie internationally.

PENANG: A 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son miraculously survived when their car plunged more than 25m to the ground from a three-storey car park in Jelutong here.

Housewife Kwok Kam Mooi and her Year Four son Ivan Lim Wai were on their way to lunch when the incident happened at about 11.45am yesterday.

Lim Wai, when met at the Penang Hospital? casualty ward, said his mother was trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle, and their Proton Waja rammed into the wall.

?ur car then plunged to the ground and landed on its side, propped up by another vehicle,? said Lim, who sustained some bruises.

?uckily, I was wearing my seatbelt, which prevented me from hitting my head against the windscreen.

?he force of the crash was so great that the seatbelt pulled hard against my abdomen.?

Kwok received more than 30 stitches for the wounds on the left side of her head. She was admitted overnight to ensure that she did not suffer a concussion.

Witness Roshidah Othman, 41, who works in a car sales office on the ground floor, said she was attending to a customer when she noticed debris falling to the ground.

?econds later, I saw a car plunging and I shouted to my two colleagues. I then saw a woman and a boy inside the car,? she said.

?e quickly got them out of the wreckage through the front passenger side. The boy was crying while the woman was bleeding from the head.?

Roshidah said she got them each a hot drink while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
