LOS ANGELES, March 11— Is “The Signal” going to be this summer’s surprise hit? Focus Features appears to think so, giving it a June 13 debut in North America. The sci-fi thriller and Sundance Festival favourite spreads with further releases to follow on June 20 and June 27, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A tale of three college students on a US road trip, one that ends up putting them on the trail of a dangerous hacker, “The Signal” is sandwiched between theatrical debuts for big money sci-fi adventures “Edge of Tomorrow” (June 6) and “Transformers: Age of Extinction” (June 27). Sure, “The Signal” might be punching above its weight in terms of budget — William Eubank’s sub-US$4 million (RM13.2 million) project squares up to the mainstream might of Tom Cruise and Michael Bay. But it’s got good underground hype thanks to that Sundance premiere and Laurence Fishburne underpinning a cast that includes Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent”), Lin Shaye (“Insidious”), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”) and Sarah Clarke (“The Twilight Saga”). — AFP-Relaxnews
