PETALING JAYA, March 11 — The water levels at dams in Selangor continue to drop with no let-up in the dry weather despite the successful cloud seeding operations carried earlier last week. Penubuhan Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) director Mohd Khairi Selamat said different resources are being looked into to raise the water levels at the dams. They include further cloud seeding operations without assistance from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). “We have engaged a private company to assist us with the cloud seeding operations because the RMAF has put its priority on search efforts of the missing (Malaysia Airlines) aircraft,” he said. Mohd Khairi said the company will use the flare method instead of the usual spraying of salt water practised by the RMAF. “The cloud seeding will be carried out by the company as soon as the Meteorological Department permits and it is expected to be some time this week,” he said. He also said groundwater was pumped from a former mining pond in Bestari Jaya last week in efforts to maintain the water level at Sungai Selangor dam. This has helped to prevent the water level from reducing faster. Mohd Khairi said another measure was to limit the release of raw water from two dams — from 1,900 MLD (million litres daily) to 500 MLD at Sungai Selangor dam, and from 130 MLD to 100 MLD at Klang Gates dam. The water level at the Sungai Selangor dam stood at 41.83 per cent yesterday, down 2 per cent drop since Thursday, and the level at the Klang Gates dam was at 52.12 per cent. Yesterday also saw the start of the third phase of water rationing covering 722,424 households and premises involving 2.9 million users in six districts in Selangor. MMail
