Pharrell Williams has his first ever chart-topping album in the UK with second solo album G I R L. The singer and producer has also become the fastest-selling artist of the year so far, racking up almost 70,000 sales over the last week. Bruce Springsteen previously held the record, with his LP High Hopes selling over 48,000 copies in its first week of release. Pharrell has gone from strength to strength over the last year, bagging a million-selling single with Oscar-nominated track Happy, which appears on G I R L. Along with Blurred Lines featuring Robin Thicke and T.I., and Get Lucky with French DJs Daft Punk, Happy is Pharrell’s third single to shift over a million copies.
Happy, from animated film Despicable Me 2, has also reached the top spot in the UK singles chart three non-consecutive times. Pharrell’s success leaves Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon in second place, followed by Bastille’s Bad Blood, True by Swedish DJ Avicii and AM by BRIT award-winning Arctic Monkeys. Metro |
