KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 — Hundreds of copies of the Quran and the Yasin scriptures were found damaged and thrown about at two neighbouring mosques in Terengganu on Tuesday morning, local Malay daily Sinar Harian said in a report published today.

The two incidents, which even saw the Muslim holy book thrown into toilet bowls, reportedly occurred at Masjid Limbongan and Masjid Nasaruddin Shah and were discovered by mosque officials at around 2.30am and 5.30am respectively.

Masjib Limbongan treasurer Che Rawi Rahim expressed shock at the incident and said those responsible for damaging the books had likely smashed the glass doors of the mosque first before throwing the holy scriptures about.

“There were Qurans that had its pages deliberately opened and put into toilet bowls. A number of the Yasin scriptures were thrown into the rubbish bin in front of the mosque’s stairs, in the ablution pond and on the soil,” the chairman of the Limbongan voluntary patrol scheme was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

According to Che Rawi, the mosque had suffered the same fate on February 24 with fewer copies of the Quran found tossed into toilet bowls. But no police report was lodged at the time.

He said that the voluntary patrol scheme he leads was started after last month’s incident but also acknowledged that close circuit television cameras (CCTV) had yet to be installed at the mosque.

Che Rawi added that when the mosque first opened its doors mid-2013, a man believed to be mentally ill burned copies of the Quran that he had brought himself.

The Masjid Nasiruddin Shah incident was discovered at around 5.38am and is believed to have involved three suspects — two who kept watch while a third individual threw copies of the holy book in the women’s prayer area.

The suspect managed to avoid being captured by the mosque’s CCTV cameras.

In a separate report, Utusan Malaysia cited an unnamed resident who said that the CCTV showed the trio on two motorcycles and the individual who threw the books was reportedly wearing a helmet.

According to Sinar Harian, Besut police chief Kamaruddin Mohd Zakaria said the suspect is believed to have suffered cuts when smashing the glass panel of a Masjid Limbongan door as traces of blood were found on the floor.

He also confirmed the Masjid Nasaruddin Shah incident, but said the motive for the attacks were unknown.

He did not discount the possibility that both cases involved the same group of suspects, saying that the police will carry out investigation under Section 295 of the Penal Code.

Section 295 of the Penal Code, which comes under the heading of “injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class”, carries the penalty of a maximum jail term of ten years or a fine or both.
