KAJANG: PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement that Barisan Nasional (BN) would campaign in the Kajang by-election in a ‘gentlemanly manner.’ On that note, Anwar urged Umno owned media such as Utusan Malaysia and TV3 to give fair coverage to PKR held events. “I welcome Muhyiddin’s call but his Umno owned media has is not fair because they do not cover our events,” said Anwar, who is PKR’s candidate for the Kajang state seat. The PKR leader was speaking at a dinner function attended by 27 Indian representatives from various NGOs, Parent Teachers Associations (PTA) and temple committees in Metro Presscott Hotel last night. Yesterday, Muhyiddin announced that BN will run a clean campaign in Kajang by-election and would not resort to personal attacks against its opponents. “We will expose their issues but we will not do any personal attacks,” Muhyiddin was reported saying. BN is fielding MCA vice president Chew Mei Fun in the by-election. Also joing the foray are former Kita party founder Zaid Ibrahim and dangdut singer, Herman Tino. On another matter, Anwar criticised veteran news editor A Kadir Jasin for misinterpreting his joke against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. “I was making fun of Mahathir’s statement. Everyone knows that. God knows how he became a group editor of a mainstream newspaper. “Mahathir claimed that a vote for Anwar is a vote for the US. So I responded by saying that it is a good thing and I would work to make RM1 becomes equivalent to USD1,” he said. Yesterday, Kadir, in a blog post, said that it was stupid for Anwar to announce that he would make RM1 equivalent to USD1 if he wins the Kajang by-election. “If the media did not misquote him, it is outrageous. Anwar speaks without thinking and believes everyone will swallow what he says,” Kadir was reported saying. -FMT-
