After just one season as a judge on American Idol, Mariah Carey didn't return to take her seat this year, which is hardly surprising given her tough time on the show. And the singer has revealed that she never should have signed up as a judge in the first place - and would have preferred to have been a mentor instead. Mariah had a very public bust-up with fellow singer and judge Nicki Minaj but that wasn't the only problem for her. Speaking to New York radio station Z100, she said instead of being a judge, she should have been the show's in-house mentor, a role recently occupied by Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine. She said: "I should've been a mentor on the show and that's it. I should've been the Jimmy Iovine. "I felt that going into the direction of making it a 'reality show' isn't what I signed up for. The real Mariah was so not there." Mariah, 43, fell out with Minaj, 31, on the show last year and the rivalry almost became unbearable to watch. And she wasn't exactly kind about Nicki when she appeared on another radio show to promote her new single You're Mine (Eternal) this week. While on Power 105.1's Breakfast Club she was asked about her time on Idol, and said: "I was a professional on that show and that's all I have to say. I was a complete professional." One host asked her about Nicki often arriving late for the show and Mariah replied with a cutting, "who?" She then said: "I don't remember what that was. That was a moment in my life that I'm just going to press delete." The 13th series of American Idol began on January 15th and while last year's judge Keith Urban has returned, Carey and Minaj have been replaced by Harry Connick Jnr and Jennifer Lopez, who makes a return after she left after the 11th series. Randy Jackson has also returned but not as judge, but as the show's mentor assisted by Adam Lambert. Via: Entertainmentwise
